Radical Change: Águeda Marqués to Train with Gjert Ingebrigtsen – Athletics News

A major news item in Spanish middle-distance running. Águeda Marqués, Olympic finalist in the 1500 metres at Paris 2024, ends her coaching relationship with Arturo Martín and will begin a new phase with Gjert Ingebrigtsen, the renowned Norwegian coach who has guided his children to the highest international level and is now doing the same with the Portuguese Patrícia Silva and Jose Carlos Pinto.

The news was disclosed by Fernando Miñana in El País and represents a radical shift in the career of a middle-distance athlete who, since the Tokyo 2025 World Championships, has barely been able to compete regularly due to a string of injuries. Ingebrigtsen, resident on the Costa del Sol for much of the year and who was acquitted of mistreating his children, will coach Águeda Marqués remotely as she relocates to her native Segovia.

The middle-distance runner, who informed the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation last week, thus ends her relationship with Arturo Martín at the CAR in Madrid, with whom she reached that magical final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and a personal best of 4:00.31 in the 1500 metres and 8:37.24 in the 3000 metres.

For now there are no further details about this new arrangement nor about the event on which Marqués will focus in the future, whether it will be her preferred 1500 metres or the 5000 metres, as she has long been associated with an athlete whose aerobic capabilities are well proven. What is clear is Gjert Ingebrigtsen’s method, with large volumes of kilometers (close to 200 weekly), extensively training the middle-distance paces (tempo or threshold) and altitude training for much of the year, with recurring camps in Sierra Nevada and St. Moritz (Switzerland).
