Anna Kalinskaya vs Zheng Qinwen preview

After a first-round bye, 15th seed Anna Kalinskaya will square off against Zheng Qinwen in the second round of the China Open 2026.
Kalinskaya made the quarterfinals of the French Open, her second Major quarterfinal as well as her first in Paris. She also advanced to the fourth round of the US Open, and reached the third round of the other two Majors.
A quarterfinal finish at the Qatar Open, the season’s first WTA 1000 tournament, remains Kalinskaya‘s best result at that level this year. She also made the last eight at the Mubadala DC Open and the Charleston Open, both WTA 500 events.
While Kalinskaya received a bye into the second round in Beijing, Zheng faced compatriot Shi Han in the first round. Zheng overturned a break deficit twice in the first set, and then edged Shi in the tie-break to clinch the opener.
Both went toe-to-toe for most of the second set. However, Zheng buckled under pressure while serving to stay in the set in the 10th game, and that cost her the set. Zheng regrouped pretty quickly and broke Shi’s serve twice in the third set to secure a 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-2 victory.

Anna Kalinskaya vs Zheng Qinwen prediction

Kalinskaya has put together a 16-11 record on hardcourts this year. She reached the fourth round of the China Open on her debut in 2024, and lost in the second round last year.
Zheng recently made the quarterfinals of the US Open, that too as a qualifier. Her run came to an end at the hands of eventual champion Elena Rybakina. She overcame a second-set stumble to beat Shi, and improved her record for the season to 14-7 on hardcourts. She made the semifinals of the China Open in 2024, and went out in the third round in 2025.
Both of their previous matches went the distance. Kalinskaya came out on top at the Guadalajara Open 2022, and then Zheng beat her en route to the Australian Open 2024 final.
Nine of Kalinskaya’s 11 losses on hardcourts this year came against top 20 players. Even though Zheng is ranked outside the top 50 at the moment, she’s playing at a pretty decent level. Based on their history, this could be another close contest, although the support of the home crowd could propel Zheng over the finish line.
Pick: Zheng Qinwen to win in three sets.
