India punished by Jay Shah’s ICC after beating West Indies in ODI series

India’s three-match ODI series against West Indies ended with a major surprise as Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162 powered the visitors to a record chase in the third match in New Chandigarh. India had already secured the series 2-0 after winning the first two games, but West Indies produced a memorable response in the final ODI.

The series ended on a mixed note for India, with the team suffering a five-wicket defeat after posting 351 for 7. India have now also been sanctioned by the ICC for a slow over-rate in the final ODI, while West Indies were punished for the same offence.

West Indies entered the third ODI having already lost the series, but they finished the ODI leg of the tour in record-breaking fashion. Chasing 352, they reached the target with five wickets in hand and 10 balls remaining, registering the highest successful run chase in men’s ODI cricket for their team.

Hope was the architect of the victory, producing an unbeaten 162 from just 143 balls. His innings included 17 fours and three sixes as he anchored the chase deep into the second innings.

Amir Jangoo provided valuable support with 67 from 56 balls, while Keemo Paul added 44 from 35. John Campbell also made a quick 10 from seven balls at the top of the order.

India had earlier posted 351 for 7 after being asked to bat first. Rohit Sharma led the way with 92 from 85 balls, while KL Rahul finished unbeaten on 129 from 87 deliveries. Ruturaj Gaikwad contributed 57, and Naman Dhir made a brisk 30.

Despite those efforts, India’s bowling attack could not defend the total as West Indies completed the chase in 48.2 overs.

India and West Indies punished by ICC after ODI series

The Men in Blue and the Men in Maroon have both been sanctioned by the ICC for maintaining slow over-rates during the third ODI in New Chandigarh.

India were found to be four overs short of their required over-rate after time allowances were taken into consideration. As a result, they were fined 20 percent of their match fee.

West Indies, meanwhile, were two overs short of the required rate and received a 10 percent fine. The sanctions were imposed by Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Both captains pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanctions, meaning formal hearings were not required.

The charges were brought by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Virender Sharma.

Shubman Gill and Kuldeep Yadav finished as top performers in the ODI series

Despite India’s defeat in the final ODI, Shubman Gill finished the series as the leading run-scorer. The India captain accumulated 334 runs in three innings at an average of 167, with his highest score being an unbeaten 223.

West Indies captain Shai Hope was second with 278 runs, while Amir Jangoo scored 239. Rohit Sharma finished fourth with 225 runs, including a century, and John Campbell completed the top five with 173 runs.

Kuldeep Yadav emerged as the leading wicket-taker of the series. The left-arm wrist-spinner claimed seven wickets across three matches, with an average of 23.85 and a best of 4 for 40.

West Indies pacer Seales finished second with four wickets, while Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar picked up three each. The two sides will now turn their attention to the five-match T20I series, which begins on October 6.
