Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Mohammad Kaif made a massive statement about veteran pacer Mohammed Shami after India’s ODI series against the West Indies. The Men in Blue won the series 2-1 but struggled with their bowling.
Taking the example of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Kaif reflected on how the two batters proved everyone wrong despite questions on their form and fitness. Similarly, the former RCB batter opined that Shami could have come back strong had he been backed. Moreover, he added that skipper Shubman Gill may not have appeared as worried if he had an experienced pacer with him in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
“Rohit and Virat proved your planning wrong. The questions and marks on them that you had, you have got the answer for that. I am sure if Shami had been backed, he would have done the same. He is such a solid bowler. Maybe Gill may not have looked as clueless or had so many problems and finding out who will partner Bumrah, if Shami was playing right now,” he said in a video on his YouTube channel.
India’s bowling attack appeared lacklustre. They conceded 405 runs in the second ODI and failed to defend 351 in the third against the West Indies, a team that will have to play the World Cup qualifiers to make it to the marquee tournament.
“Maybe you are getting it wrong with Shami as well” – Former RCB batter blasts management on poor decision-making
In the same video, Mohammad Kaif also blasted the management for their wrong decision-making with regards to senior players. The former RCB batter recalled how Rohit Sharma was sacked as captain after the 2025 Champions Trophy and how there were question marks on his and Virat Kohli’s place in the playing XI.
However, he stated that the veteran batters would be the first names on the team sheet for the 2027 World Cup at present. Similarly, the former RCB cricketer opined that the management might be wrong in their decision to sideline Mohammed Shami, saying Rohit and Kohli would have been out of the team by now if the management’s thinking was actually right.
“Even Rohit was removed from captaincy after the 2025 Champions Trophy. He scored in the final. There were questions on Virat too. It has been almost two years since the Champions Trophy. Even today, if you make the playing XI, these two will be at the top in that list. They have forced you to fix their spots in the XI for the World Cup. So your thinking and decision making was wrong even then. They are fit, in form and scoring. So in a similar way, maybe you are getting it wrong with Shami as well,” the former RCB batter reflected.
“If your thinking was right, Rohit and Virat would not have survived till now. It is the same case with Shami. If he was playing, he would be in the list too. Look at his current form. Why is he not eligible? That too in a time where you don’t have bowlers who are even half as skilled as him,” he added.
Having last played international cricket in 2025, Shami has been actively playing in domestic cricket across formats and has picked up wickets as well, proving his worth.
