Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra feels Sanju Samson has not seized the limited opportunity given to him in International cricket. Chopra added that they are a lot of qualities available within the Indian team. Samson has struggled to get a consistent run in the national side.
Speaking to YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia on ‘TRS Clips’, Aakash Chopra said Sanju Samson would have realized that he would have only limited opportunity in the Indian team, and he has to make use of the opportunity whenever it is provided. Chopra cited the example of Ishan Kishan being dropped from playing 11 despite scoring a double century in the previous match pointing out the competition in the Indian Team
“Sanju realizes that he is going to get limited opportunities in the current set-up, There is just no place in the XI. Ishan Kishan scored a double-century and yet we didn’t give him the next few matches. When he did, he was asked to bat at No. 5. So that is the level of quality that is available. When the opportunity comes, just grab it away. If you throw it away for whatever reason, then you regret it.”
Aakash Chopra recalled the time when Sanju Samson was touted to be the next superstar of Indian cricket and admitted Samson has one of the true fan bases in world cricket added keeping everything Chopra feels Samson would have not made any difference even if he played ahead of Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant.
“During the Sanju Samson, phase it felt as if he is god’s gift to Indian cricket. People said Play him and everything will fall in place. We would have even won the World Cup final. In reality, his batting wouldn’t have made any difference. The atmosphere was such that if Samson had played, we could have done this and that,” he added.
The Kerala batter failed to make it to the ODI squad against Australia as KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan were retained as the wicketkeepers for the Australia ODI series. Samson has scored 330 runs in 11 ODIs so far at an impressive batting average of 66. 28 years old, to date has featured for India in 11 ODIs and 17 T20Is for India.
