Mikel Arteta has hailed the long awaited return of Gabriel Jesus to the Arsenal side after a four-month absence.
However, the Brazilian was warned that he needs to earn back his spot in the Gunners’ starting XI.
Jesus has been absent from the squad since November as a result of a knee injury that he picked up at the World Cup with Brazil.
The 25-year-old finally made his Arsenal return during their 3-0 win against Fulham on Sunday, coming off the bench for Leandro Trossard in the 77th minute.
Arteta was pleased to see his star striker back in the frame, but insists the player is not a guaranteed starter despite the brilliant impact he had pre-injury.
Speaking about Jesus after the match, Arteta said: “A big boost. It was the first step today.
“We didn’t know whether it was the right game but yesterday I looked him in his eyes and he said, ‘I am ready’.
“Now he needs to earn his place, like any other player.”
Jesus scored five goals and assisted a further seven in 20 appearances across all competitions for Arsenal before injury.
Eddie Nketiah filled the void in his absence, but Arteta has more recently opted to use Gabriel Martinelli instead.
Gabriel, Martinelli and Martin Odegaard all scored to guide the Gunners to an important three points, with Leandro Trossard assisting every goal.
Arsenal remain top of the Premier League table and are once again five points clear of Jesus’ former side, Manchester City.
