Alexander Zverev explains the importance of his girlfriend, Sophia Thomalla, in his life
Alexander Zverev, ranked No. 3 in the world, has been vocal about the support and security that Thomalla has brought to his life since they got together. After entering into a relationship in 2021, Zverev emphasised how Thomalla’s support has allowed him to play better during an interview with tennismagazine.de.
“I think for tennis players, it’s always very important who you have by your side,” Zverev said. “Sophia is someone who gives me calm and security. I’ve done everything I can to get to where I am now. But of course, you can see that this is the first time I have a partner supporting me.
“I play extremely well with her backing me, and I hope that will continue next year and maybe even improve. I haven’t achieved all my goals yet.”
In 2024, Zverev revealed the measures that Thomalla takes to ensure he has everything that he needs as an athlete.
“Sophia is much more than just a girlfriend. She knows what a tennis pro needs and when, pays attention to diet, takes care of almost everything for me at home, organizes a lot, which of course helps,” Zverev told Bild.
On the tennis front, Alexander Zverev competed at the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this month and stormed into the semi-final. However, he was ousted by eventual winner Jannik Sinner and crashed out of the tournament. He then shifted his focus to the BMW Open and suffered a similar fate.
The three-time champion in the tournament, Zverev, impressed in front of his home crowd and squared off against Flavio Cobolli in the last four. Once again, another Italian ended his title hopes as Cobolli notched a commanding 3-6, 3-6 triumph over the home favourite.
