Donald Trump delivers plea for unity in aftermath of White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting

It felt like deja vu for President Donald Trump and the United States on Saturday night. Once again, Trump was the subject of a potential assassination attempt, this time during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

A shooter opened fire at the Hilton hotel where the event was taking place. It occurred before the event could even get going. The shooter was soon apprehended and the event was canceled for the time being. Trump made a quick statement on social media, claiming that he wanted the show to go on despite the traumatic experience.

President Donald Trump’s official statement from White House calls for resolving differences

Following the postponement of the event, Trump returned to the White House, where he made another statement from the Oval Office. Trump seemed to be excited about the potential of the dinner, which he believed was set to bring everyone together.

In light of this evening’s events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our differences peacefully. We have to resolve our differences. You had republicans, democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals and progressives. Everybody in that room, big crowd, record-setting crowd. There was a tremendous amount of love and coming together. I watched and I was very, very impressed by that.

Trump also made sure to praise the law enforcement officers who “did a great job” in subduing the shooter and restoring order in a timely manner.

The President also made sure to use the situation as another major justification for building a special Ball Room that would be much safer to hold events in.
