Xabi Alonso concedes on major demand in Chelsea talks as deal agreed

Chelsea have agreed a deal with ex-Liverpool star boss Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard closing in on the Stamford Bridge hot seat.

    The wait is almost over.

Chelsea are closing in on appointing Alonso as their new head coach, according to various reliable media sources.

It is the appointment the club’s hierarchy have been working towards for weeks, it now looks a matter of when rather than if.

Alonso has been Chelsea’s overwhelming first-choice candidate throughout the process, with optimism that he will join imminently.

Chelsea could now announce the tactician’s arrival before the final Premier League fixtures are played next weekend and potentially within the next 24 hours.

The 44-year-old has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in January after a turbulent six-month spell at the Bernabeu, but his reputation within European football remains formidable, built on the back of a transformative two-and-a-half-year stint at Bayer Leverkusen where he led the club to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023/24.

Chelsea’s senior sporting leadership group — Laurence Stewart, Paul Winstanley, Joe Shields, Sam Jewell and Dave Fallows — are understood to be firmly united behind him as the standout appointment.

What makes TEAMtalk’s latest report particularly significant, however, is what it reveals about the nature of the discussions — and what Alonso has conceded to join the club.

Xabi Alonso concedes on major demand in Chelsea talks as deal agreed

There were suggestions in recent weeks that the former midfielder was demanding significant control over Chelsea’s recruitment and football operations as a condition of taking the job.

It was a narrative that gained traction given the club’s well-documented issues with managerial authority under BlueCo’s ownership, with previous coaches reportedly frustrated by the extent to which transfer decisions were taken above their heads.

However, TEAMtalk and journalist Graeme Bailey paint a different picture.

According to their information, Alonso now isn’t demanding total control over recruitment or football operations at Chelsea.

Instead, the Spaniard is now said to acknowledge that Chelsea already have a star-studded side that requires only a few key additions to become genuine title contenders.

That is a notable stance, and one that suggests Alonso is willing to work within the existing structure rather than attempt to overhaul it.

That being said, Chelsea are reportedly prepared to adjust elements of their current working model to ensure he feels fully supported.

Liverpool had long been considered the more likely landing spot for Alonso.

He spent five years at Anfield as a player and is still revered on Merseyside, and with question marks hanging over Arne Slot’s future, speculation about a return had been persistent.

But Chelsea moved quickly and decisively, and it now appears that speed has paid off.

If the deal goes through as expected, it will end a period of significant instability in the Chelsea dugout. Five permanent managers have occupied the role since BlueCo completed their takeover, and the constant cycle of hiring and firing has become one of the loudest criticisms of the ownership.

Bringing in a coach of Alonso’s calibre — and doing so with what appears to be a genuine plan for collaboration rather than conflict — would represent a meaningful change of approach.
