When telling the story of the NWSL, or the Houston Dash in particular, it is impossible to do so without the name Jane Campbell. Since even before her entrance into the NWSL in 2017, Campbell has accumulated success and proven to be one of the most reliable goalkeepers women’s soccer has seen in recent history.
Whether you look at her time at Stanford, the legacy she built with Houston, or even her reliability for the U.S. Women’s National Teams, Jane Campbell has established a legacy in which many young goalkeepers making their way up the ranks today will aspire to match.
Racking Up the Early Accolades
Born in Kennesaw, Georgia, Campbell’s soccer career really took off in her youth years. She played her youth club soccer first with the North Atlanta Soccer Association, then spending some time with Concorde Fire South. In her youth club years, Campbell would go on to become a two-time NSCAA Youth All-American, as well as be named the 2011 NSCAA Youth Girls Player of the Year.
Campbell would earn herself the opportunity to play her collegiate soccer at the prestigious Stanford University. There, she would cement herself as one of the nation’s brightest goalkeeping talents, as well as a historic player for the school’s program. In her four seasons there, Campbell was an absolute machine, starting in 84 of a possible 91 games and notching the most ever minutes played by a goalkeeper across Stanford’s history.
When it was all set and done at Stanford, Campbell racked up the accolades at Stanford. Specifically, she earned all-Pac-12 honors three times in her four years, as well as being named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year in 2015. When it comes to the Stanford recordbooks, on top of her goalkeeper minutes record, Campbell ended her time in Palo Alto tied for the most shutouts and tied for the third most saves in program history. Her time at Stanford cemented her as one of the greatest collegiate goalkeepers in recent history, and earned Campbell her place in the NWSL.
Becoming an H-Town Legend
In 2017, Campbell was selected by the Houston Dash in the NWSL Draft, the team she would end up playing for to this day. Campbell’s start with Houston was quick and effective, earning herself a nomination for NWSL Rookie of the Year and cemented herself as one of the premier keepers in the league.
While Houston hasn’t had nearly as much success as other clubs across the NWSL, Campbell was an integral part of their most successful season. In 2020, the Dash won the NWSL Challenge Cup, a run that couldn’t have happened without Campbell’s four clean sheets during the tournament.
It seemed like Campbell was getting better every season, and this was most evident in 2023. During that season, she earned the title of NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year, as well as a spot on the NWSL Best XI. She would ride this momentum into the following season, in which Campbell would make history and match the NWSL single-game record for saves in Houston’s matchup with Kansas City.
Since then, Campbell earned herself a new contract with the Dash and made even more history in reaching 15,000 career minutes. Now, as Houston fights for a playoff spot, Jane Campbell is their captain, bringing over nine years of experience and standing as the greatest player in the club’s history.
A Reliable Asset for the USWNT
Campbell’s illustrious career in the NWSL has been supplemented by her impact on the international stage. Previously, Campbell had serious success with the U.S. Youth National Teams, specifically with the U-17 squad. However, fast forward a few years, and she is doing more of the same with the USWNT.
Campbell has appeared in 10 games for the USWNT, and has become a staple in many of the rosters. More specifically, she was a part of the 2020 Olympic Team, as well as multiple SheBelieves Cup teams. Recently, she was a part of the squad that took on Japan in a series of friendlies. Similar to her long-lasting impact in Houston, Campbell has become a consistent force for the USWNT whenever her name is called, bringing steady leadership to one of the most dominant national teams in the country.
