Back in maroon, Shimron Hetmyer rejoins the West Indies lineup for the coming ODIs versus Sri Lanka – so does Alzarri Joseph – ahead of key matches on home soil. Last seen in an ODI during the 2025 tour against England, Hetmyer returns as the team shapes its plans around the 2027 World Cup.
“Following his impressive performances during the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Shimron Hetmyer has been reintegrated into the West Indies ODI setup as part of CWI’s strategic build-up towards the 50-Over World Cup in October and November next year,” CWI said in a statement while naming the 15-man squad that will be led by Shai Hope.
Back in the ODI squad after twelve months, Hetmyer shares space with Joseph who eyes a comeback following a back issue. Not seen since mid-2025, that player now gets another chance. Among others stepping back into the fold: Shamar Joseph plus Gudakesh Motie.
How Hetmyer’s return affects the lineup?
Out of nowhere, Hetmyer steps in to bring serious power to the Windies’ middle lineup. Lately, their batting has stumbled badly through recent clashes with Bangladesh and New Zealand. Out came collapse after collapse when facing Bangladesh – scores like 133 and just 117 left them nearly broken across those three ODIs, scraping one win only because of a Super Over twist.
That top-order spot gets stronger now Hetmyer is back in. His last tournament stood out – the 2026 T20 World Cup saw him lead his team’s scoring, racking up 248 runs across seven knocks while moving at nearly 187 per hundred balls.
Fighting for a shot at the 2027 ODI World Cup without going through qualifiers, the Windies sit tenth in the current standings. Their path hinges on ranking above ninth place by qualification time. Moving up means securing direct entry – this happens only if South Africa hold their ground inside the top eight, where they now stand. A slip from the Proteas could shift the cutoff line. Right now, everything depends on who stays put and who climbs.
Sri Lanka Tours West Indies Across Multiple Formats
Out in the Caribbean, Sri Lanka have started their mixed-format trip against the West Indies. Starting June 3, three one-day games set the pace – next ones lined up for June 6 and 8. Each of those matches unfolds at Sabina Park, Kingston’s cricket ground. Right after, short-form clashes follow, three T20s shaking things up. Then come the longer battles: two Test matches close out the stretch.
