As soon as it was learned earlier this spring that the Denver Broncos had signed general manager George Paton to a five-year contract extension, it seemed like it was a matter of when and not if head coach Sean Payton would receive a similar deal to keep the two married to the franchise for the foreseeable future.
The Broncos confirmed such news on Thursday.
How long is Sean Payton now under contract?
According to the Broncos’ website, Payton has signed a new five-year contract that runs through the 2030 season.
The Broncos acquired Payton’s rights from the New Orleans Saints back in 2023, and that trade has worked out quite well for Denver. In total, the 62-year-old has accumulated a 32-19 regular-season record during his Broncos tenure.
Perhaps most importantly, Payton has been credited for the club’s decision to select quarterback Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. Together, Nix and Payton helped the Broncos reach this year’s conference championship game, and Denver may have advanced to the Super Bowl had Nix not suffered a broken bone in his right ankle during the divisional round of the playoffs.

We’re thrilled for Sean to continue leading our team as head coach, building on our progress during such an exciting time for the Broncos.”
Shortly after the Broncos announced the news of Payton’s deal, DraftKings Sportsbook had Denver tied for seventh among the betting favorites at +1025 odds to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LXI this coming February. Such information shows that the Broncos may not necessarily be a Super-Bowl-or-bust team this spring, possibly due to concerns related to Nix’s ongoing recovery.
Such odds could also serve as bulletin-board material for Payton’s side once training-camp practices begin in late July.
