NFL insider addresses interesting Cowboys, Brendan Sorsby rumors

Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports is among the noteworthy members of the NFL community who have suggested this week that Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones could consider grabbing former Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby during the upcoming supplemental draft.

During a Wednesday appearance on NFL Network, league insider Tom Pelissero didn’t rule out the idea that Jones could take a flier on Sorsby in July.

Is Jerry Jones looking for an eventual Dak Prescott replacement?

“We’ve seen Jerry Jones in the past go out and trade for a Joe Milton [or] this year bringing in a Sam Howell [while] trying to figure out who is [their] backup to Dak Prescott,” Pelissero explained, per Pat Pickens of Heavy. “Who could be the quarterback after Dak Prescott?”

Before the start of the 2024 season, Prescott signed a four-year contract extension reportedly worth $240M with $231M guaranteed. He is just 32 years old and, thus, should have at least several top-tier years left in the tank.

That said, Sorsby has physical traits that will make him an appealing prospect for teams. While his much-publicized history with gambling could scare some would-be employers off, it was revealed on Wednesday that at least 26 clubs had reached out to Sorsby’s agent to learn more about the signal-caller this week.

Why Cowboys, other teams may accept risks associated with Brendan Sorsby

“Multiple people mentioned to me [that] if Brendan Sorsby had been in the 2026 draft,” Pelissero continued, “there was a conversation about whether or not he could have been QB1. That may not be the consensus, but all it takes is one team, and the fact the talent alone and his skill set puts him into that category tells you this guy would’ve been a first-round pick in 2027. Any team with a short- or medium- or long-term quarterback need at least has to have the conversation.”

Grabbing Sorsby in the supplemental draft would cost the Cowboys their corresponding pick in next year’s draft. For an article published on Thursday morning, Mike Jones of The Athletic shared that “three talent evaluators predicted that if eligible, Sorsby could go as early as the second or third round of the supplemental draft.”

It’s unknown if Jones would give up such an asset to land Sorsby. The supplemental draft will take place on or before July 16.
