Beginning the second half on a sour note (2-7), the Philadelphia Phillies are limping toward the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski can pull out a miracle just as his counterpart Mike Gansey did with the Philadelphia 76ers when he signed LeBron James. But the Phillies may need to part with some of their best players in the farm system to accomplish something of that magnitude.
The Phillies could be open to trading Andrew Painter and Gage Wood for “the right deal”
The Phillies don’t have much in their farm system to get a franchise-altering deal done, but they do have a few players that could help reshape the roster. According to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury (h/t 97.5 The Fanatic), for the “right deal,” the Phillies could be willing to trade top arms Andrew Painter and Gage Wood.
Wood is the Phillies’ top prospect and is ranked 48th on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100. At the same time, Painter also appeared on the Top 100 entering the season (he’s since graduated from the list). He was a former first-round pick (13th overall in 2021) and made his major league debut this season.
