Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has urged Michael Carrick not to sell Marcus Rashford. He claimed that a sale to a direct rival like Chelsea or Arsenal will come back to haunt the club.
Speaking to Andy’s Bet Club, Meulensteen said that selling Rashford would end up as Scott McTominay’s move to Napoli, and the club will regret it later. He believes that the Englishman should not be sold to any Premier League side and said:
Thanks for the submission!
“Would selling Rashford be a repeat of selling Scott McTominay? I don’t think people see McTominay the same way. He moved because the club wanted to sell, and he has done brilliantly since. People might wonder if United sold him too early, but selling Rashford to a direct competitor like Arsenal or Chelsea could really hurt you.” (via Tribal Football)
Meulensteen went on to claim that Rashford should be added back to the Manchester United squad this summer. He wants the forward to speak clearly with the manager about his role and said:
“He is still a player who can make a difference. Ideally, if United sell him, they should sell him abroad. Carrick is the type of person who recognises Marcus’s qualities. They need an open conversation so Marcus understands what is required. Carrick won’t want to bring someone back if it creates another problem. If the clarity is there, he would be happy to bring him back into the fold.”
Marcus Rashford has not played for the Red Devils since late 2024, when he was dropped from the squad by Ruben Amorim before being loaned to Aston Villa. He joined Barcelona for the 2025/26 season, but the Catalan side did not sign him permanently.
Barcelona manager heaps praise on Manchester United star Marcus Rashford
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick spoke about Marcus Rashford earlier this week, heaping praise on the Manchester United star. The German admitted that he wanted to keep the forward, and said:
“What I can say about Marcus is I appreciated working with him. Sometimes it’s not always you don’t know what happens with players who are on loan. Our situation also is not easy, but I appreciate him a lot working with him; he’s a fantastic player, a fantastic person. I think also the team miss him; I will miss him, but that’s life.”
Marcus Rashford has been linked with AS Roma, while Tottenham are also said to be keeping tabs on the Englishman.
