A blockbuster crossover is brewing between NASCAR and Australia’s premier touring car category. Plans are underway for Joe Gibbs Racing star Ty Gibbs to make a wildcard appearance in the Supercars Championship. If greenlit, Gibbs will pilot a third Toyota GR Supra for Walkinshaw TWG Racing during the season-ending bp Adelaide Grand Final.
The proposed wildcard entry would serve as a major spectacle to cap off Toyota’s maiden season in Australia’s top-tier motorsport championship. Walkinshaw TWG Racing, serving as Toyota’s official partner, currently fields full-time GR Supras for Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood. Adding a third car for NASCAR driver Gibbs at the iconic Adelaide Parklands Street Circuit would represent a significant show of strength for the Japanese manufacturer in its debut campaign.

While Supercars officials and Adelaide event organizers are on board with the plan, the program is currently awaiting final corporate sign-off from key stakeholders in the United States.
Ty Gibbs’ potential excursion Down Under follows a growing trend of young NASCAR talent seeking extra road-course experience to sharpen their skills against three-time Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen. Team Penske’s Austin Cindric previously completed a similar Adelaide stint, while NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion Jesse Love ran in the Dunlop Super2 Series.

Ty Gibbs scored a signature victory at the Iowa Corn 350 at Iowa Speedway, holding off hard-charging teammate Christopher Bell by just 0.253 seconds to capture his second career NASCAR Cup Series win. The 23-year-old driver of the No. 54 Toyota Camry capitalized on a bold two-tire pit stop call by crew chief Tyler Allen on Lap 291. By jumping Bell on track position, Gibbs fended off intense pressure over the final stint to secure his second checkered flag of the 2026 season.
Reflecting on his run at Iowa, Gibbs said:
“We made a big step from last year, obviously, and I really appreciate it. But I really appreciate all my teammates too. I wouldn’t be here without all my teammates as well, week in and week out, just help keep developing the program. And obviously we’re all up front for a reason. I really appreciate Denny and Chase and Christopher for all their help, obviously.”
With momentum on his side and his playoff berth long locked in, Ty Gibbs now turns his attention to another short-track test at Richmond Raceway for the Cook Out 400.
