Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans Return Rejected Over Captaincy Demand: Report

Hardik Pandya has become one of the most talked-about names ahead of the next IPL season. In recent days, his name has been linked with several franchises, with fresh reports regularly emerging about his future at Mumbai Indians.

Now, another interesting report has surfaced, and this time it involves his former franchise, Gujarat Titans.

According to a report by Devendra Pandey in The Indian Express, the possibility of Hardik returning to Gujarat Titans was discussed. GT were reportedly open to bringing their former captain back, but one condition eventually became the main roadblock.

Hardik Pandya Gujarat Titans Trade: Where Did The Talks Get Stuck?

According to the report, Gujarat Titans considered the possibility of bringing Hardik back into their squad after proposal from Hardik itself. The franchise also discussed the matter with their current captain, Shubman Gill.

Interestingly, Gill reportedly had no objection to Hardik returning to the team. This suggests that Gujarat were not against bringing Hardik back as a player.

However, things changed when captaincy entered the discussion.

The report claims that captaincy was part of Hardik’s proposal for a possible return. Gujarat Titans were not ready to accept that condition, and the potential move did not progress further.

In simple terms, GT were open to having Hardik back as a player, but not at the cost of replacing Shubman Gill as captain.

Hardik Pandya Had A Highly Successful Run With Gujarat Titans

Hardik Pandya and Gujarat Titans share plenty of history.

Gujarat entered the IPL in 2022, and Hardik led them to the title in their very first season. It was a remarkable start for the franchise and also established Hardik as a successful IPL captain.

The following season, Gujarat once again reached the final under Hardik. They came very close to winning back-to-back titles before losing to Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023 final.

So, in his two seasons as GT captain, Hardik led the franchise to one IPL title and another final.

Despite that success, Hardik returned to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024. Gujarat then decided to move forward with Shubman Gill as their captain.

Why Gujarat Titans Want To Continue With Shubman Gill

This is probably the most important part of the entire story.

Hardik may have enjoyed huge success as Gujarat Titans captain, but the franchise has now invested heavily in Shubman Gill as its long-term leader.

Gill’s stature in Indian cricket has also grown significantly. He is currently the captain of India’s Test and ODI teams and is one of the biggest names in Indian cricket.

When Hardik left Gujarat, the franchise trusted Gill and handed him the captaincy. Going back on that decision just to bring Hardik back would not make much sense from GT’s long-term point of view.

For Gujarat Titans, therefore, bringing Hardik back as a player could have been an option. Replacing Gill as captain was a completely different matter.

And that appears to be where the proposed move broke down.

Gujarat Titans Did Not Comment On The Report

There is another important side to this story.

When The Indian Express contacted Gujarat Titans regarding the matter, a franchise representative declined to comment.

Hardik Pandya’s spokesperson, however, denied that the player had directly approached any IPL franchise regarding a transfer.

The spokesperson said that Hardik had not directly spoken to any franchise about a trade or transfer and that any approach made to his camp was directed towards Mumbai Indians.

Therefore, there is no official confirmation of a Hardik Pandya trade at this stage.

Neither Gujarat Titans nor Mumbai Indians have officially announced anything regarding his future.

Questions Over Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai Indians Captaincy

The uncertainty around Hardik’s future has also increased because of questions surrounding his position at Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai endured a poor IPL 2026 campaign, winning only four of their 14 league matches and finishing ninth in the points table.

Following the season, questions were raised over Hardik’s captaincy.

A separate Indian Express report suggested that Mumbai Indians could consider a change in captaincy and that Hardik’s overall role in the team could also come under discussion.

This is one of the reasons why so many reports about Hardik and a possible move away from Mumbai Indians have started emerging.

However, it is important to remember that Mumbai Indians have not officially announced any decision regarding Hardik’s captaincy or his future with the franchise.
