Harry Maguire sends clear Marcus Rashford message as latter’s Manchester United future hangs in the balance

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has made his feelings clear about Marcus Rashford amid links to Rashford’s exit from the club.

Marcus Rashford played his first game for Manchester United since December 2024, as the Red Devils lost to AC Milan in a pre-season friendly. The English winger came on as a substitute in the second half but didn’t have a match-defining impact on the game.

Rashford spent the latter part of the 2024-25 season on loan at Aston Villa and the entirety of the 2025-26 season at Spanish giants Barcelona. He helped the Catalan club defend their LaLiga crown by putting in impressive performances. He was expected to join the Blaugrana club permanently, but Hansi Flick’s side decided to sign Anthony Gordon instead.

Rashford is now back at Manchester United and played his first minutes for the club in their final pre-season friendly. Speaking after the game, Harry Maguire admitted that he was unsure if Rashford would remain at the club beyond the transfer window, but added that he’d love to see his England national teammate reintegrated into the Red Devils squad. He said (via BBC Sport):

“Obviously the transfer window is still open, as players, we hope he stays because if he does, he is a big asset to have. He can improve us for sure.

“You saw when he came on, he threatened the backline really well. He could have scored. He’s a huge threat. I’ve played with Marcus for numerous years and I know that playing against him and playing with him in training is going to help us.”

Manchester United and Rashford have until September 1st to make a decision regarding his future. Recent reports claimed the Red Devils will reintegrate Rashford into the squad as Carrick is ready to work with him. Reports also claimed the Manchester side are set to give Rashford the No.14 jersey as a message of trust.

Manchester United legend says Red Devils supporters will forgive Marcus Rashford as he returns to the club

Manchester United icon Patrice Evra has asked Marcus Rashford to put his head down and work hard as he returns to his boyhood club after a successful loan spell at Barcelona. Speaking to GOAL, he asked Rashford to avoid the online trolls as the real fans want him to succeed:

“So he just needs to be honest with himself. But the fans forgive. Some of them, yes, on social media, they’re going to make some noise, but the real United fans, they really want Marcus Rashford to succeed at United.”
