Andreas Almgren never tires of being in the news. After dominating the 10,000 meters at the European Championships in Birmingham, the Swedish athlete now has a new challenge: he will make his marathon debut at the New York City Marathon, on November 1.
At 31 years old, Almgren arrives at the distance with extraordinary credentials in long-distance events. He is the European half-marathon record holder with 58:41, a mark set in Valencia in 2025, and he also boasts a spectacular 26:45 for 10 kilometers, a time he has achieved twice this year, in Valencia and Castellón. Now he will face for the first time the 42 kilometers and 195 meters in the world’s best marathon.
The athlete himself confirmed the news via his social networks: “I’ve been wanting to tell you this for a long time, and I can finally announce that I will debut in the marathon at the New York City Marathon. I am more than excited! And don’t worry, I’m not saying goodbye to the track.”
The Swedish athlete thus faces one final challenge in a 2026 that has established him as one of the big names in global distance running. New York will be the stage for his distance debut, though he makes clear that his venture into the marathon does not mean, at least for now, a farewell to the track.
