“Gonna tank and take Arch Manning in the draft”: NFL fans react as Jerry Jones admits Cowboys being overrated after Giants loss

Jerry Jones has a stunning admission about the Dallas Cowboys, and fans are drawing all sorts of inferences about it.

During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Friday, the octogenarian owner said about the New York Giants‘ defeat of his team in the first Sunday Night Football game of the 2026 season:

“They just did a good job all over. And I will tell you, they were better than we thought they were. I’m anxious to see how New York continues to play, but I really — combination of things. We didn’t play as well as we should play and can play, but they played better than I thought they could.”

He also acknowledged that the Cowboys might not actually be as good as advertised:

“Well, and to say it that way, I’d rather say it more positively. We’re not at the level that we thought we would be. I can give you a lot of reasons. We’re dealing with a conceptually new coaching staff, dealing with a ‘new’ to a lot of people out there. The defensive scheme. And then you’re dealing with people who are fresh into that scheme.”

Jerry Jones admits that the Giants “were better than we thought they were.” (He also acknowledges that the Cowboys may not be as good as he thought they’d be.)

And fans had varying takes on it:

@ProFootballTalk He’s gonna tank and take Arch Manning in the draft!

@ProFootballTalk How? I knew the Giants would be better this year. And….. I don’t work at the Star.

@ProFootballTalk Be as bad as you can possibly be Cowboys, the Jets have your first round pick. 😂

@ProFootballTalk We always get to the point where the Cowboys admit they suck. After game 1 is pretty early this year. Saves us a lot of time.

@ProFootballTalk Can we just have mean, mad, aggressive, wanna knock your head off, OL & Def lineman for a change?

@ProFootballTalk Overrated and overhyped every year for the last 30 years

Jerry Jones’ son Stephen sends message to Cowboys after loss at Giants

In contrast to Jerry Jones’ mix of surprise and worry, his son Stephen carried a more optimistic tone in his radio appearance on Friday. The Cowboys’ executive vice president said:

“We’re not going to let ourselves get too overdone here… because we do feel really good about this team and actually felt good going into last week. But obviously didn’t play as well as we hoped. It was disappointing, but it’s certainly not going to define us. At the same time, we’re going to own it and understand that we have to be better than that if we’re going to win.”

    He continued:

“There’s some things that we can certainly not only improve but easily correct, and we just gotta go out there and make some plays … I know Dak (Prescott) on his side of the ball and his group all feel good … And I know Christian (Parker) and this defense know they can play a lot better and will be better.”

The Cowboys host the Washington Commanders tomorrow. Kickoff is at 3:25 p.m. CT on Fox.
