From the first pitch of the San Diego Padres Game 1 win over the Chicago Cubs in the National League Wild Card, it felt like the Cubs never had a chance.
Michael King started his seven-inning, eight-strikeout, one-hit performance with a three-pitch K of likely-MVP Pete Crow-Armstrong in the top of the first before Fernando Tatis Jr. took Chicago’s Matthew Boyd deep on his first pitch of the night en route to an 8-0 win.
Tatis Jr. finished the 2026 regular season with 25 home runs, right in line with his totals from the previous three seasons despite not hitting his first dinger until May 30. If he and Manny Machado (who also hit a first-inning home run against Boyd) get hot, the Padres should be a very tough out in the National League.
The Cubs will trot out veteran Kevin Gausman to start their win-or-go-home Game 2, who tossed six innings of three-run ball against San Diego in July, allowing just four hits but walking another three batters in the 5-4 loss while still a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Tatis Jr. is still the most recent Padre to eclipse the 40-homer milestone, mashing 42 in 2021. With that being said, can you name the most recent 40-HR hitter for each MLB franchise?
