Former India batter raises fitness worry over Shubman Gill, asks him to learn from Virat Kohli

Shubman Gill has been in breathtaking form in the current year; so far, he has been the leading run scorer for the Men in Blue in the 2026 calendar year. He won his second ODI series as captain after his side defeated West Indies in the 2nd ODI. Ahead of the 3rd ODI, former India batter Deep Dasgupta has warned Gill about his fitness.

India vs West Indies three-match ODI series has been ongoing, with the Men in Blue already having won the series after their historic 406-run chase at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, winning the game by 8 wickets. Shubman Gill’s side will aim to clean sweep the Caribbean side on Saturday at the PCA Stadium, in New Chandigarh.

“He has been playing with a few injuries”: Deep Dasgupta worried of Shubman Gill’s fitness

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta has expressed concern over Shubman Gill’s fitness. While speaking on his YouTube channel, he revealed that Gill should be working on his fitness as he has just entered his late 20s and is at the peak of his career. Dasgupta feels that the Team India captain has been playing with injuries, as he suffers cramps while playing long innings.

“In the last two years, he seems to have hit his peak across all formats and in the IPL. The late 20s are usually when a batter hits his peak. It’s also when a batter understands himself best.”

“My only concern is that off-late, he has been playing with a few injuries. He couldn’t do much about a neck injury. But he suffered from cramps a couple of times when he crossed 70 or 80. Hopefully, he maintains his fitness levels.”

Deep Dasgupta picks Virat Kohli as epitome of fitness

In the same video, citing the example of Virat Kohli, who has been at his peak with his fitness at the age of 37, he never has cramps or gets injured often. Virat has been the epitome of fitness for Indian cricket and continues to be the same, so Deep Dasgupta feels that Gill, who has been spending more time with Kohli, should have some learning.

“Virat (Kohli) is a great example. He hit his peak, and he’s still going on, because he has maintained his fitness with determination and focus. Hopefully Shubman gets to learn that as he is spending time with Virat right now. It’ll help him sustain his peak for a long time.”

“He’s a lot more confident”: Deep Dasgupta praises Shubman Gill’s 223* run innings

Deep Dasgupta also praised the 223* run innings of Shubman Gill in the historic run chase of the Men in Blue against the Caribbean side. He believes that the 27-year-old batter has been more mature in the last couple of years, has also been gaining experience in the leadership role, and has been more confident.

“You can see Gill has matured as a player and a person in the last one to two years. He is also growing into that captaincy role. If you see his press conferences from a year back to now, you can see that he’s a lot more confident,” said Dasgupta

The team India captain smacked the fastest double century in ODIs in 117 deliveries and became the first India batter to score a hundred in a run chase. He is only the second India batter to smash multiple double centuries in ODIs after Rohit Sharma (3).
