NHL insider addresses Rick Tocchet’s future with Flyers after winless start

It’s an understatement to say that Philadelphia Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet is under fire. In the 2026-27 NHL season so far, the Flyers are winless with a 0-5-2 record. This is officially the team’s worst start to a season.

The Flyers’ disappointing start to the 2026-27 campaign has led many to question how long Tocchet has until he gets fired. While many believed Tocchet could be fired anytime soon, NHL insider Anthony Di Marco thinks otherwise. According to him, Tocchet’s job is not in trouble.

    On X, Di Marco wrote:

“Fwiw Tocchet’s job isn’t in trouble, I’m told. Don’t expect an imminent coaching change for PHI.”

You can check Anthony Di Marco’s tweet on Rick Tocchet below:

An ex-player of the Philadelphia Flyers, Rick Tocchet took over as the team’s head coach before the start of the 2025-26 season. In the 2025-26 NHL season, Tocchet led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup playoffs before they were eventually eliminated by the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round.

Before coaching the Flyers, Tocchet was also head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Arizona Coyotes, and Vancouver Canucks. In his entire coaching career, Tocchet made the playoffs three times and has yet to win a Stanley Cup.

Sportsnet’s Michael Amato believes Flyers’ Rick Tocchet is on the hot seat

While insider Anthony Di Marco believes that Rick Tocchet’s job as Flyers head coach is safe for now, Sportsnet’s Michael Amato thinks otherwise. In his column, Amato wrote that Tocchet could land in trouble if he fails to turn things around soon.

    Amato wrote:

“The Philadelphia Flyers’ surprising run to the post-season last spring was a great story, but it also brought with it the weight of expectation… Philly’s rebuild was accelerated and now a slow start has some hitting the panic button. The Flyers are still winless on the season and have been outscored 24-7 and outshot 219-121 in six games, putting the focus on Rick Tocchet to turn things around quickly. Typically, coaches that are on the hot seat are not those from teams that aren’t expected to push for the playoffs. The ones that are in trouble tend to be from squads that are expected to take a step forward, and based on what the Flyers did last season, missing the playoffs should be deemed unacceptable. If Tocchet doesn’t turn things around soon, he could be in trouble.”

In their next game, the Philadelphia Flyers will take on the Seattle Kraken at the Xfinity Mobile Arena on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if Tocchet and his men will be able to end their bad run of form in this game.
