Mumbai Indians are reportedly considering bringing Rohit Sharma back as captain for IPL 2027. According to a report by Sports Tak, the five-time IPL champions are exploring the possibility of handing the leadership back to their most successful captain, replacing Hardik Pandya.
However, there are strong cricketing reasons to believe that Rohit Sharma himself would reject the captaincy even if Mumbai Indians offered it to him.
The issue is not Rohit’s leadership ability. His achievements as captain are beyond question. The real concern is whether returning to the captaincy at this stage of his career would benefit Mumbai Indians, their future leaders, and Rohit’s own preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Here are four major reasons why Rohit could turn down the offer.
Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Record Is Beyond Question
Before discussing why Rohit might reject the captaincy, it is important to understand what he has achieved as a leader.
Rohit led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Under his leadership, Mumbai became one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
His achievements with India have been equally impressive.
India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final after winning ten consecutive matches. Although India lost the final against Australia, Rohit’s leadership throughout the tournament was widely appreciated.
He subsequently led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and the 2025 Champions Trophy, winning both tournaments without a defeat.
Like MS Dhoni, Rohit has built a remarkable captaincy legacy through major tournament victories and his ability to develop a successful team.
Therefore, questioning his suitability for the Mumbai Indians captaincy is not about questioning his credentials. It is about understanding what the franchise needs in 2027.
1. Rohit Sharma Would Not Want Mumbai Indians to Have a Short-Term Captain
The first and perhaps most logical reason is Rohit’s understanding of Mumbai Indians and their long-term future.
Rohit has repeatedly expressed his emotional connection with the franchise. He has played a major role in building the team, developing young players and creating a winning culture.
He understands that a successful IPL team cannot be built around constantly changing captains.
Rohit will turn 40 in April 2027. At that stage, his remaining IPL career could be limited to one or two seasons.
If Mumbai Indians appoint him captain for IPL 2027, they might have to search for another leader shortly afterwards.
That would create another leadership transition instead of providing the team with long-term stability.
A captain generally needs sufficient time to understand the squad, develop combinations, identify future players and establish a consistent strategy.
Ideally, Mumbai Indians should appoint someone capable of leading the franchise for at least three or four seasons.
Rohit understands the importance of building a team for the future. That is precisely why he may refuse a short-term return to captaincy.
His loyalty towards Mumbai Indians could influence him to put the franchise’s long-term interests ahead of another opportunity to lead it.
2. Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah Deserve Their Opportunity
Another important factor is the presence of two established leadership candidates within Mumbai Indians.
Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah have the experience, cricketing understanding and stature to lead the franchise.
Suryakumar has already captained India in T20 cricket, while Bumrah has demonstrated his leadership abilities at the international level.
Both players could potentially provide Mumbai Indians with several seasons of leadership.
When Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as captain ahead of IPL 2024, questions emerged about why senior players such as Suryakumar and Bumrah had not been considered for the role.
From a cricketing perspective, both had strong claims to the position.
Now, if Mumbai Indians decide to move beyond Hardik, appointing Rohit again would mean overlooking these two candidates for another season.
Rohit is experienced enough to understand what that could mean for their leadership ambitions.
At this stage of his career, he has little left to prove as captain. Suryakumar and Bumrah, however, still have the opportunity to establish their own leadership legacies in the IPL.
Rohit would not want to stand in the way of two players who have earned the right to be considered for Mumbai Indians’ captaincy.
3. Rohit Would Not Want Another Leadership Controversy Inside Mumbai Indians
This could be the biggest reason behind Rohit’s possible refusal.
Mumbai Indians faced considerable controversy when Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit as captain ahead of IPL 2024.
The decision divided sections of the fanbase, while reports and speculation also raised questions about relationships within the dressing room.
There were suggestions that senior players were unhappy with the leadership transition, although their personal feelings were never conclusively established publicly.
Now imagine a similar situation in IPL 2027.
Suppose Hardik is removed from the captaincy and Mumbai Indians once again hand the responsibility to Rohit.
Suryakumar and Bumrah might respect Rohit enormously, but the decision could still raise a difficult question for them.
If they are capable of leading the franchise for several years, why should Mumbai Indians appoint a 40-year-old captain who may have only a limited playing career remaining?
They were overlooked when Hardik became captain, and another appointment ahead of them could create fresh disappointment.
This does not mean Suryakumar or Bumrah would necessarily oppose Rohit. However, repeated uncertainty over leadership can affect the confidence and long-term ambitions of senior players.
Rohit knows how important trust and unity are within a successful dressing room.
He has spent years building relationships with Mumbai Indians players and understands that even a respected senior cricketer should not become the centre of another captaincy controversy.
Rohit would not want Suryakumar Yadav or Jasprit Bumrah to feel that their leadership opportunities were being blocked because of him.
He would also understand that disappointment over team decisions can affect the atmosphere within a squad.
Rather than accepting the captaincy and creating another potentially uncomfortable transition, Rohit could prefer to support a new leader from within the team.
That would allow Mumbai Indians to begin a fresh chapter without repeating the problems surrounding the previous leadership change.
4. The 2027 ODI World Cup Could Be Rohit’s Biggest Priority
There is another major reason why Rohit may not want the additional responsibility of captaining Mumbai Indians.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is expected to be his final opportunity to win the tournament as a player.
Rohit came extremely close to winning the 2023 ODI World Cup, but India lost to Australia in the final.
Having already won the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy as captain, winning the ODI World Cup remains an important ambition.
Rohit has also dealt with hamstring-related fitness problems during his career.
At 40, managing his body and maintaining fitness could become even more important.
T20 cricket demands explosive movements, quick running and intense physical effort within a short period. Captaincy would add another responsibility, requiring Rohit to remain involved in field placements, bowling changes and decisions throughout the innings.
Although captaincy itself does not automatically increase injury risk, the additional demands of leading an IPL franchise could complicate his workload management.
Rohit has already spoken about the sacrifices required to achieve his cricketing goals.
If he wants to enter the 2027 ODI World Cup fully fit, avoiding unnecessary physical and mental pressure could become a priority.
He can still contribute significantly to Mumbai Indians as an experienced opening batter and senior member of the squad without taking responsibility for every decision on the field.
For Rohit, another IPL captaincy stint may simply not be worth compromising his preparation for what could be the final ODI World Cup of his career.
Why Rohit Sharma Could Personally Reject the Mumbai Indians Captaincy
Sports Tak’s report has brought the possibility of Rohit’s return into discussion, but Mumbai Indians considering the move does not necessarily mean Rohit would accept it.
His five IPL trophies have already secured his place among the greatest captains in the tournament’s history.
At this stage, he has more reasons to focus on Mumbai Indians’ future, support deserving leadership candidates and protect his fitness for the 2027 ODI World Cup than to return for a short captaincy stint.
From CricInformer’s cricketing analysis, even if Mumbai Indians formally offer Rohit Sharma the captaincy for IPL 2027, he is likely to reject it himself.
The decision would not diminish his leadership legacy. Instead, it could be another example of Rohit putting the team’s long-term interests ahead of his personal ambitions.
