Elina Svitolina Storms Back to Book Canadian Open 2026 Semifinal

Elina Svitolina extended her WTA 1000 winning streak to 10 matches on Monday night in Toronto.

The Ukrainian rallied past Ekaterina Alexandrova 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to book her spot in the Canadian Open 2026 semifinals. Next up is No. 7 seed Iga Świątek.

Elina Svitolina Flips Momentum in Toronto

Despite the final score, Alexandrova had every reason to feel confident early in the match.

She was riding the aggressive baseline game that toppled world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka a round earlier, and she used it to take the opener 6-3. Then Svitolina flipped the match on its head.

The 2017 Toronto champion reeled off 11 of the next 12 games and built a 5-1 lead in the decider. Alexandrova clawed back to 5-3 before Svitolina broke in the ninth game to close it out in 1 hour, 33 minutes.

“I think she was playing really well, serving really unreturnable to be fair,” Svitolina said afterward. “So I had to really try to find opportunities to see the ball better and I think focusing on myself more. I found my game was playing really well from the baseline after.”

The result is Svitolina’s fourth WTA 1000 semifinal of 2026, the most on this season’s WTA Tour. Świątek will be familiar territory. The Polish star leads their all-time series 4-3, but Svitolina has taken both 2026 meetings, at Indian Wells and Rome. Each went the distance.

“For me it will be important to stay physical. It’s going to be lots of long rallies,” Svitolina said of the upcoming meeting.

“She’s also a great fighter. It’s going to be about trying to find the keys in that game, trying to find the particular patterns that are going to work against her.”
