“Broken system” – Brad Marchand hits back at Gary Bettman’s comments on no-trade clauses

Brad Marchand is not holding back on his assessment of Gary Bettman’s recent comments on the no-trade clause. For the unversed, Bettman recently said the National Hockey League is deviating from the original purpose of no-trade clauses.

According to Bettman, the no-trade clause came to fruition because it was intended to protect players signing long-term in a place they wanted to stay. Bettman argued that the purpose of the no-trade clause was not to allow players to demand a trade and dictate their next destination.

The NHL Commissioner stated that if the situation around the no-trade clause continues to grow, then it would have to be addressed with the Players’ Association. While Bettman’s comments received various reactions on social media, Brad Marchand recently clapped back at Bettman.

In the comments section of a post containing Bettman’s comments, Marchand wrote:

“lol this goes both ways. I guess it’s ok if a team signs you to A long term deal and wants to trade you but not if you want out during that term. Broken system.”

While Brad Marchand did not shy away from issuing a blunt response to Gary Bettman’s comments, the Florida Panthers star was missing in action during the opening games of the season. This is because Marchand has been dealing with an injury.

When will Brad Marchand return to action?

Brad Marchand suffered a lower-body injury while playing for the Florida Panthers in the 2026-27 NHL season. Then, in August, Marchand revealed that he underwent surgery to address the injury, but did not reveal the exact details.

While Marchand missed the Panthers’ first two games of the season, fans are now wondering when he will return to action. In a statement to The Associated Press, Panthers coach Paul Maurice revealed that Marchand will enter rehab this month.

“He’s going to take the month of October for rehab… That may mean he’s ready to play right at the end of it. That may mean he needs a short period of time, assuming no setbacks. But we’re planning on rehabbing for October.”

In the 2025-26 NHL season, Brad Marchand was an important player for the Florida Panthers. Marchand featured in 52 games and recorded 52 points (27 goals, 27 assists).
