How Melanie Barcenas earned herself a two-year contract extension – Equalizer Soccer

In March 2023, at only 15 years of age, Melanie Barcenas became the second-ever player to join the National Women’s Soccer League using the newly established Under-18 Entry Mechanism when she signed for her hometown club. Her initial deal ran through 2025, and in the 1,000 or so minutes she played across those first three seasons for the San Diego Wave, she managed 36 total shots across inconsistent minutes, turning 1.79 expected goals (xG) into two goals for her team.

Once Barcenas’ contract ran out, the Wave decided to sign her to a new contract, this time only one year long. At the beginning of the 2026 season, it seemed like she would be getting the same sporadic minutes that she had been subject to in years past, even after she scored twice as a substitute in her first few games.

Her first start didn’t come until the Wave’s 11th match of the season, but she’s started all but three matches since then, eventually earning herself a two-year contract extension in mid-September. What has made this season so different for the young San Diego native?
