“Call Drew Brees” “Prove it by firing Mickey Loomis”: NFL fans react as Saints owner Gayle Benson makes stance clear on unacceptable performance

New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson delivered a blunt assessment of the team’s struggles in the early stages of this season on Tuesday. The Saints are currently sitting on a 1-4 record, with their only win so far coming in the controversial Week 2 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Speaking at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club luncheon, Benson addressed the team’s three consecutive losses, including a lopsided home defeat to the Minnesota Vikings. She made it clear how unacceptable the performance of the team has been this season, while reinstating her commitment to getting better results on the field.

“As the owner, the responsibility does start with me,” Benson said, via Rod Walker of NOLA.com. “I will not make excuses and I will not accept this level of performance as our standard.

“I am committed to making the decisions necessary to improve this team. Everyone on this organization understands the urgency. We must prepare better, execute consistently and correct mistakes that are costing us the games.”

Gayle Benson pledged to hold people accountable if the Saints fail to turn things around in the coming weeks. She specifically mentioned the names of second-year coach Kellen Moore and long-time general manager Mickey Loomis in her address.

“Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform,” Benson said. “Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success. Our players are responsible for their preparation and execution. I am responsible for holding this organization accountable.”

Gayle Benson’s words about the Saints’ performance and expected standard ignited a lot of reactions among NFL fans. Many called for concrete action from the ownership to bring back the glory days.

Here’s a look at some of the reactions online:

“Go girl! Call Drew,” a fan wrote.

“She needs to prove it by firing Loomis,” another fan wrote.

“Amy Adams Strunk take notes #TitanUp,” a fan commented.

“And yet Loomis will never be fired,” a fan commented.

“How about getting a new GM?” another fan commented.

“lol… if she expected much more than this, that’s on her. That roster blows,” another fan commented.

Gayle Benson reacts to losing at “Domecoming” anniversary

Playing before a national audience on Monday night while marking the 20th anniversary of their return to the Superdome, the Saints suffered a 45-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Gayle Benson reacted to the defeat, which is the most disappointing so far this season.

“Twenty years ago, the Saints returned to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina,” Benson said while addressing the Falcons loss. “We all remember Steve Gleason’s blocked punt.

“The roar of the crowd and what it meant to see our city come together once again. Losing this year’s anniversary game to Atlanta was truly disappointing. Hearing our fans’ memories of that homecoming reinforced how deeply this team is woven into their lives.”

With the poor start to the 2026 season, the Saints risk missing the playoffs for another year. New Orleans last participated in postseason football in 2020 under Sean Payton.
