Texas HC Steve Sarkisian’s Arch Manning ‘Joe Smith’ comment sparks backlash

As ClutchPoints shared, USA Today college football writer Blake Toppmeyer called Sarkisian’s defense “a feeble attempt at gaslighting that only the most devoted Manning acolyte would believe.”

Calling it gaslighting seems harsh. That said, it’s hard to argue Arch Manning has met expectations over his career.

“‘Joe Smith’ fits Manning because, despite how frequently it has felt like he is the most promising or overrated or over-hated QB ever, he really just plays like a ‘Joe Smith,'” wrote The Athletic’s Jason Kirk in a Tuesday newsletter.

Through five games, Arch Manning ranks 65th in the country in passing yards (1,122) and 44th in QBR (65.5). For context, Georgia Bulldogs senior QB Gunner Stockton, a far less heralded passer, ranks 47th in passing yards (1,298) and second in QBR (90.4).

Now, not all of Texas’ offensive problems are Arch Manning’s fault. Despite adding running backs Hollywood Smothers and Raleek Brown in the transfer portal, the Longhorns rank 88th in the nation in rushing yards (142.2 YPG).

The problem, however, is Mannings are expected to elevate their teams; Arch Manning isn’t. In fact, his inconsistencies have sometimes kept the 4-1 Longhorns from firing on all cylinders. That may be rattling his confidence.

Sarkisian realizes that. So, to keep his QB from losing more mojo, he said things would be different if he were “Joe Smith.” That may be true. But that doesn’t change the fact he isn’t “Joe Smith.”

He’s a member of football’s version of the royal family. That makes him a target for unrelenting scrutiny. So do his NIL (name, image and likeness) deals.

Per On3, Arch Manning is making $2.5M this season (No. 20 among college athletes). And few can sympathize with a privileged kid who’s already racking in millions.

Sarkisian aimed to shield his QB from detractors with his latest comment. He instead invited even sharper criticism. The coach better hope Arch Manning tunes it out as he prepares for Saturday’s home game against the 4-2 Florida Gators (ABC, noon ET).
