Former India player Aakash Chopra has lauded Shubman Gill for playing a fighting knock in the Gujarat Titans’ (GT) IPL 2026 clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He opined that the GT skipper wants to prove that KKR erred in releasing him ahead of the IPL 2022 auction.
KKR set GT a 248-run target in Match 60 of IPL 2026 in Kolkata on Saturday, May 16. Gill scored 85 runs off 49 balls in the chase, but couldn’t help his side avoid a 29-run defeat, as the visitors were restricted to 218/4.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, ‘Aakash Chopra,’ the former India batter noted that Gill invariably takes the KKR bowlers to the cleaners whenever he plays against his former franchise.
“Shubman was outstanding. Whenever Shubman comes in front of KKR, I think he sends a reminder that they didn’t do the right thing in letting him go. At that time, I had made a video that KKR’s next captain should be Shubman Gill. However, KKR didn’t think like that, and they let him go,” Chopra said.
“They let him and Suryakumar Yadav go, and then Shreyas Iyer also left. It seems slightly personal that he has to thrash this team a little. He was really good the way he played against spin. He took down Sunil Narine. That was phenomenal to watch,” he added.
Shubman Gill struck five fours and seven sixes during his 85-run knock in GT’s IPL 2026 clash against KKR. He added 128 runs for the second wicket with Jos Buttler, with the latter scoring a 35-ball 57.
“Why did he return?” – Aakash Chopra on Sai Sudharsan after GT’s IPL 2026 loss vs KKR

In the same video, Aakash Chopra questioned why Sai Sudharsan returned to bat after retiring hurt initially in GT’s IPL 2026 clash against KKR.
“Jos Buttler also played incredibly well. Sai Sudharsan played at the start, got injured, and then he returned. Why did he return? I was slightly surprised. He had scored 40 runs off 20 balls. When you see his total, you say runs weren’t scored after that,” he said.
The cricketer-turned-commentator opined that Jason Holder should have been sent to bat instead of the left-handed opener.
“They weren’t going to win the match, but shouldn’t Jason Holder have been sent? Who could have taken you closer to a win – the guy who can hit sixes. One team hit 22 sixes, and the other hit 11. That’s the difference. You can’t chase 240 runs without hitting sixes, and their best six-hitting player, who, in my opinion, is Jason Holder, lower down the order, didn’t get to bat,” Chopra explained.
Sai Sudharsan scored an unbeaten 53 off 28 balls in GT’s IPL 2026 clash against KKR. He was forced to retire hurt after being struck a painful blow on his left elbow when he had scored 23 runs off 13 balls, but returned to bat at the fall of Shubman Gill’s wicket.
