“I don’t respect that” – Jakub Mensik fires shots at French Open umpire for penalty controversy in brutal heat

Jakub Mensik expressed his discontent with the French Open umpire issuing him a penalty during his second round. The Czech player stated that he understood and respected the strict rules at the Grand Slam, but also hoped for some flexibility from the umpire during the extreme heat.

The 20-year-old stated his displeasure with losing his first serve after going a few seconds over the time limit. Mensik also highlighted a possible scuffle between him and the umpire after the match, but chose not to reveal the details. Reflecting on his faceoff, Mensik said:

“I spoke about the rules. Obviously, on the ATP tournament, it’s a little bit different. You have a little bit different time. You can have a little bit of some excuses. But here it’s super strict, which I totally respect that. But obviously, in this heat and in these conditions, it’s insane. But alright, the rules are rules. Of course, during some time, yes, normally when a spectator will watch, he will be like, okay, you know, giving mercy, 5 more seconds, 10 more seconds.. which obviously I didn’t have.”

” And then I lost my first serve because of that. Like I’m saying, I respect that. I was in that moment. But yeah, the referee today, what happened after the match, I will keep it for myself. But the behavior of that is kind of… I would say… I don’t respect that.”

Jakub Mensik was seen cramping on the court following his four-hour and 41-minute intense battle with Mariano Navone, which he won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (11). He was seen struggling between the points and was handed a violation for taking too much time between points. Following the win, he fell to the ground and was barely able to lift himself up. The Czech player only got up after receiving assistance from medical personnel.

Jakub Mensik will take on Alex de Minaur during his third round at the 2026 Roland Garros, which will be held on Friday, May 9. He will compete against the Australian player for the sixth time on the ATP Tour. De Minaur will enter the third round after receiving a walkover as his second-round opponent, Alexander Blockx, pulled out, citing an injury.

The Australian player has entered the Roland Garros following his semi-final exit at the Hamburg Open. He also won the ATP Rotterdam title this year, which marked his best result of the season. Mensik’s best result of the year so far was clinching the ASB Classic tournament.
