A major change could soon take place in India’s T20I team, as the future of captain Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly come under serious discussion. Just months after leading India to the T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav is now facing one of the toughest phases of his career.
His place in the team, as well as his captaincy, has been questioned because of his poor form with the bat and fitness concerns. Suryakumar Yadav’s future will be one of the biggest issues to discuss when the selectors meet to pick India’s squads for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England.
Suryakumar Yadav’s T20I future under serious threat
As reported by Times of India, Suryakumar Yadav’s recent performances have forced national selectors to think about the future. The 35-year-old has been struggling for runs for a long time now, and a troublesome wrist injury has made matters worse.
It is being said that selectors have been monitoring the situation closely and are now considering whether it is the right time to move in a new direction. And its biggest hint was Suryakumar’s snub from the probables for the upcoming Asian Games.
However, some people from the Indian think tank believe that Suryakumar Yadav, who won the country a T20 World Cup, deserves more patience and support. They believe the stylish batter has earned the right to get more opportunities before any drastic decision is taken.
Shreyas Iyer emerges as front-runner to replace Suryakumar Yadav
However, many feel India must start planning for the future now. With the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup approaching, many believe the team needs a long-term captain who can build a stable core over the next few years.
One of the strongest contenders is Shreyas Iyer. The Mumbai batter was already appointed vice-captain for Afghanistan ODIs and is seen as a potential leader for India’s white-ball teams. Iyer is likely to take the No. 4 batting position if Suryakumar loses his place in the T20I side.
Another serious option is Axar Patel. The all-rounder served as vice-captain during India’s T20 World Cup campaign and has impressed many with his calm approach and consistency. His experience and all-round skills make him a strong candidate.
Young wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who recently led Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026, is also seen as a future leader. Even Sanju Samson is part of the discussion. The final decision will be taken by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir to make crucial call on India’s T20I future soon
They have worked together on several important decisions, but some reports suggest there have been differences of opinion on certain selection and team matters in the past. That is why the upcoming selection meeting is expected to be extremely important.
A source was quoted as saying by Times of India, “Ajit is a very strong chief selector, one of the strongest to have been in charge. He has taken some tough calls with an eye on the future, and he, along with his panel, has a plan in place for the T20I captaincy and the way forward. That’s the reason Shreyas was appointed vice-captain in ODIs and was in the squad for the last bilateral series India played before the T20 World Cup.”
He added, “Is he now the coach’s choice? Or he has someone else in mind? And will that someone be the selectors’ choice? These are the important points of discussion. Axar Patel was the vice-captain for the World Cup; Ishan Kishan has age, form, and leadership credentials; and then there is Sanju Samson’s name doing the rounds. Samson has recency bias on his side, but his inconsistency has not pleased key stakeholders.”
