WWE apparently had to take a bit of a precautionary measure this past Friday on SmackDown for the Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther match, but in the end, it wasn’t necessary.
If you watched SmackDown on June 19th, you might recall that the first hour was commercial-free. According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, the reason for this was that it would have gone head-to-head with Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. However, that didn’t actually happen because the Knicks won in Game 5 (4-1 in the series).
Thanks for the submission!
This is why the Cody Rhodes vs Gunther match took place during a commercial-free hour. As fans know, it ended controversially again with Sami Zayn getting involved with Gunther and hitting the fast-count to give Cody the win. The American Nightmare wasn’t exactly pleased with the way things played out either, and demanded another title defense.
[Mild spoilers] A huge brawl broke out on the June 26 episode of WWE SmackDown
This isn’t a massive spoiler in terms of the outcome of Night of Champions, but this is a mild spoiler regarding the main event segment of SmackDown, which was pre-taped for June 26. London got to experience RAW and SmackDown on the same night.
There was a huge official debut made, but we won’t get into that. What we will get into is the main event segment, which, as you may have predicted, involves Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes, and Gunther – the three men competing for the Undisputed WWE Title this Saturday at Night of Champions 2026. That’s because Cody Rhodes asked Nick Aldis to give him both Gunther and Sami Zayn at Saudi Arabia, and he got his wish.
The main event of SmackDown will feature the three men brawling, but the two King of the Ring finalists, Oba Femi and Jey Uso, will also be involved. This means that a five-man brawl ensued to conclude the build-up to Night of Champions 2026.
It’s going to be interesting to see how things play out as we conclude June.
