Triple H makes statement after a historic first for a top championship in WWE

The latest edition of WWE SmackDown emanated from the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island, and it was a historic night as an AAA title was defended in a World Wrestling Entertainment ring for the first time. The Stamford-based promotion’s CCO, Triple H, took to social media to put over the historic event and the Mexican promotion.

Rey Fenix defended his freshly won AAA Cruiserweight Championship against Axiom on last night’s edition of SmackDown. After a hellacious battle, the Mexican star successfully defended his title against the Spanish. After the night, Triple H took to social media to laud the historic event, as the AAA title had never been defended in a World Wrestling Entertainment ring before.

Taking to X/Twitter, Triple H shared some snippets of the historic title match and said he was proud to see the Mexican promotion grow:

“Last night on SmackDown, @ReyFenixMx defended the AAA Cruiserweight Championship against @Axiom_WWE … the first time EVER in @wwe ring. Proud to see this brand grow. See a new episode tonight of @luchalibreaaa at 10pm ET on @youtube.”

Rey Fenix made his debut with the global juggernaut in April 2025 against Axiom’s tag team partner, Nathan Frazer. Although he hasn’t managed to get over with the fans quite like his brother Penta has, the luchador seems to be coming into his own finally.

He won his first title since making the jump to the Stamford-based promotion from AEW. He defeated Laredo Kid on May 30 to win the AAA Cruiserweight Championship for a second time.

The Undertaker too was keenly watching the AAA Cruiserweight Championship being defended on WWE television for the first time.

After the match, the Head of Creative for AAA took to X/Twitter to congratulate Rey Fenix on his title defence.

“Big congrats to @ReyFenixMx on successfully defending the #AAACruiserweightChampionship and proudly representing @luchalibreaaa,” he wrote.

Big congrats to @ReyFenixMx on successfully defending the #AAACruiserweightChampionship and proudly representing @luchalibreaaa.

It remains to be seen what heights Rey Fenix can take the AAA Cruiserweight Championship to.
