    First Socceroos transfer domino falls as breakout star seals big European move

    Paul Okon-Engstler is the first transfer domino to fall for the Socceroos after the World Cup, according to reports.

    Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday that Bundesliga side 1. FC Koln has snapped up the 21-year-old midfielder for 1 million euros.

    The deal pockets Sydney FC about A$1.65m, with Romano reporting the deal will be made official, pending a medical, next week.

    Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg also reported Okon-Engstler has agreed a contract until 2030.

    Okon-Engstler — son of Socceroos great Paul — was a surprise starter in Australia’s 2-0 World Cup win over Turkiye and turned in an impressive performance, which included a sublime assist to Nestory Irankunda for the opening goal.

    And he could be just the first Socceroo to seal a big European move after the World Cup.

    Teen centre-back Lucas Herrington has been linked to a long list of European giants, while Irankunda it the subject of speculation of Bayern Munich exercising its buy-back clause on the Watford winger.
