Gotham FC defeated the Washington Spirit yet again, this time in front of a city record attendance for a women’s sports event at Citi Field in Queens. A club-record 42,175 fans watched The Queens Classic, the second-largest crowd in league history and the largest on the East Coast.
The crowd was treated to a magnificent Rose Lavelle game-winner in the 37th minute. The perfectly lofted chip over the keeper was the game’s only goal.
Forward Sam Kerr made her return to Gotham FC, appearing in an NWSL game for the first time in six years and 261 days, and her first GFC game in eight years and 288 days. The Australian striker played 26 minutes off the bench.
This is the fifth straight match in all competitions (three regular season, one playoff, one Concacaf) that the Spirit have failed to score against Gotham. Their last goal was in the 2024 semifinals, scored by Hal Hershfelt. All five of the meetings were played in different venues.
