Trysta Krick slammed the WNBA coaching staff over an untaken timeout decision that cost the New York Liberty Game 2 of the playoff semifinals. On Wednesday, the Liberty lost 98-101 in overtime to the Dream.
In the final moments of the game, with 4.3 seconds left on the clock and a score of 98-101, the Liberty inbounded the ball from the baseline. They had a reset timeout remaining, but did not use it. The ball ended up in Breanna Stewart‘s hands, who took a desperate shot that ended in an airball.
After the game, Krick shared a video on Instagram, slamming the coaching staff for failing to use their timeout.
“One of the most disastrous coaching blunders I’ve seen maybe in a playoff game,” she said. “We have a timeout, 4.6 seconds, we have a timeout to reset and advance the ball.”
“What does Chris DeMarco do? Does he know he has a timeout? What the (expletive) is this? What is this? What kind of blunder? At least have an assistant to say ‘hey, let’s advance the basketball and set some up cold play’… I can’t overstate how bad this is.”
Later, she slammed the league’s officials for allegedly giving wrong information to Breanna Stewart during the game before firing a final shot at the Liberty coach and his coaching staff.
“Now I am kinda like, ‘these refs might clearly need to be fired.’ That’s your entire job,” she said. “It is to keep track of how many fouls each player has, how many timeouts each team has. I don’t know, just like basic stuff, but also Chris DeMarco, it’s on you and your staff to also keep copious notes, come on.”
“It is what it is”: Liberty coach Chris DeMarco agrees to Breanna Stewart’s claim against the referees after Game 2 loss
In the postgame conference, Breanna Stewart went after the referees for telling her that New York didn’t have a timeout. She alleged that an official told her that she didn’t have a timeout when she had asked about it while Angel Reese made her second free throw to make it a one-possession game.
Coach Chris DeMarco, who was sitting beside Stewart, agreed that the officials fed the same information to him and the coaching staff.
“Same thing, they said we didn’t have it,” he said. “We gotta demand more but it is what it is.”
The Liberty head back to Brooklyn on a two-game deficit in the best-of-five series. They have to win the next game on Friday to keep their season alive.
