Arsenal have been in talks to sign a “world-class” striker, who is now looking to leave his club this summer.
Gunners eyeing new striker after setting Gabriel Jesus price tag
The Gunners’ 22-year wait to lift the Premier League title came to an end on Sunday, with Declan Rice doing the honours after a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace, and Gabriel Jesus was on the scoresheet, in what could be his final game for the club.
Jesus has only played a limited role this season, having spent a large part of the campaign recovering from an ACL tear, but he may have signed off in ideal fashion, ahead of a potential return to Brazil.
Palmeiras have been credited with an interest in the centre-forward, who may be available for an affordable fee, with the Premier League champions willing to offload him for just £5m.
Mikel Arteta can perhaps afford to part ways with the 29-year-old, considering the Spaniard also has Viktor Gyokeres at his disposal, with the 27-year-old netting 14 Premier League goals in a solid debut season at the Emirates Stadium.
However, it appears as though Arteta remains keen on bringing in a new striker to challenge for Gyokeres’ starting spot.
Arsenal hold talks to sign “world-class” striker
Journalist Pedro Fullana has now revealed Arsenal have held talks to sign Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, with the Argentinian now interested in leaving the Spanish side this summer.
Fullana said: “There have been intermediaries with connections to PSG and Arsenal who have also inquired with Atletico. It’s obvious that the club knows that when all this is happening, it’s because Julián’s agents, and therefore Julián himself, have given the green light for discussions about his future away from Atletico Madrid.”
The Gunners have been pushing hard to sign Alvarez, who recorded 20 goals and 11 assists in 67 Premier League appearances for Manchester City, but it could take as much as £100m to tempt the La Liga side into a sale.
Alvarez left Man City after Erling Haaland’s arrival, with the Norwegian proving to be difficult to dislodge in the starting XI, and Arteta would also have a selection dilemma on his hands if Andrea Berta manages to get a deal done.
Gyokeres has been named as the signing of the season by Wayne Rooney, who said: “I think Viktor Gyokeres. Granit Xhaka has been brilliant for Sunderland but look at what Gyokeres has brought to Arsenal, it’s exactly what they’ve needed. Finishing second over the last three years, I think he’s given Arsenal something a bit different and that’s been a big factor in them winning the Premier League.”
Alvarez, on the other hand, has been lauded as “world-class” by FC Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi, with the Atletico star registering 20 goals and nine assists in 49 matches in all competitions.
