Jordan Spieth fizzled down the stretch at the FedEx St. Jude Championship to drop outside the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings.
The struggling star has failed to qualify for the BMW Championship and Tour Championship for the third straight season, and now his career could be at its breaking point.

Because Spieth didn’t finish the season ranked inside the top 50, he won’t automatically qualify for Signature Events in 2027. He will have to qualify through the Aon Next 10 or Aon Swing 5, win a tournament in 2027, play his way into the top 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking or receive sponsor exemptions to compete in the PGA Tour’s biggest events.
Spieth was still able to tee it up at Signature Events this year thanks to sponsor exemptions. The three-time major champion still sells tickets and attracts eyeballs to television broadcasts, but how long will that last? The 33-year-old is past his prime. He hasn’t won on Tour in four years and didn’t record a single top-10 finish in 2026.
If that trend continues, Spieth’s popularity with the fans won’t be enough to keep his career afloat. Sponsor exemptions may gift Spieth free passes to Signature Events next season, but that avenue isn’t available at major championships.
The Texan’s U.S. Open exemption has run dry. He’ll likely need to rank inside the top 60 in the OWGR by next June to qualify for the 2027 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Spieth currently ranks 55th and will be outside the top 60 by the start of next season. Despite the disappointing finish to the season, Spieth believes his game is trending in the right direction.
