With LIV Golf‘s future in peril, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and others could come crawling back to the PGA Tour as soon as next season. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler were asked about that possibility ahead of the BMW Championship, and their answers couldn’t have been any different.
Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler have opposing viewpoints
Scheffler, being the fiery competitor he is, wants to compete against the best players in the world as often as possible. That hasn’t been possible on the PGA Tour since Rahm, DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton and Joaquin Niemann defected to LIV Golf.
“Getting the best players competing against each other more often is, I think, what everybody wants,” Scheffler said Wednesday from Bellerive Country Club, per Golfweek. “When we talk about the best players, you know, LIV has a few players that are really good. I think the depth that we have on our Tour is a bit unmatched, but I think when you look at the higher levels of LIV Golf there’s definitely some players that would provide a lot of value to the Tour, and guys that I love competing against as well.”
Scheffler believes the best version of the PGA Tour is one that involves those talented players who left for LIV. He’s excited about the opportunity to compete against them more than four times every year.
As for McIlroy, he doesn’t feel the same.
Facing a similar question on Wednesday, the Northern Irishman stood firm that the PGA Tour doesn’t need to offer amnesty to the traitors.
“I’d argue, have they brought value to LIV? You know? I think the PGA Tour is in a really good spot,” McIlroy said.
