María Vicente once again showed her best form in Birmingham. The Catalan athlete finished eighth in the European Championships heptathlon, with 6,372 points, a new Spanish record, and she also secured a finalist berth by just one point.
Vicente closed the competition with a superb 2:14.81 in the 800 metres, very close to her personal best (2:13.83), to seal that eighth place. Behind her was the other Spanish athlete, Sofía Cosculluela, thirteenth in the first 800m heat with 2:21.20 and 5,999 points in the heptathlon to finish 18th.
The result represents the well-deserved reward for many months of hardship and recovery after injuries. Moreover, today is the birthday of her longtime coach, Ramón Cid.

I’ve always been fascinated by the stories hidden behind a stopwatch, a finish line or a record-breaking performance. At Athletics News, I cover athletes, competitions and the moments shaping track and field, with a particular interest in the people and journeys behind the results.
