Manchester United urged to sign Karim Benzema

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged his old club to strengthen the frontline by signing Karim Benzema.

The Red Devils currently have Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee as specialist striker options. However, the Dutchman has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League since joining from Bologna a couple of years ago.

On the other hand, Sesko has shown glimpses of his high potential but has struggled with fitness problems. As a result, Michael Carrick has used Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in the CF position, but they are more comfortable on the flanks.

Now, on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand says (via Metro) that Man Utd should sign a new experienced striker as Sesko hasn’t been able to play consistently since joining from RB Leipzig last year.

Danny Welbeck would have been a shrewd acquisition, but he joined Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion this summer. However, Benzema would be a shrewd acquisition.

    Ferdinand said:

“If you knew you had to manage his [Sesko] minutes, I totally agree with you. Without him, there isn’t really a focal point. Welbeck springs to mind, obviously, so does Benzema. Two players I feel would have added huge value to the forward line that we have.”

After enjoying great success with Real Madrid, Benzema moved to Saudi Arabia. However, after leaving Al-Hilal this summer, he is currently a free agent.

Therefore, United would be able to secure his services immediately if they make a move. However, the 38-year-old has reached the twilight of his career, and there is a question mark over whether he is capable enough to showcase his best in a physical league like the Premier League.

Meanwhile, after finishing third in the Premier League last term, it was thought that the Red Devils would take the next step in their rebuild under Carrick’s guidance this season.

United even revamped the engine room by purchasing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba this summer. However, the Old Trafford club have endured a dire start this term.

United are currently languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table with five points from as many games. Moreover, they have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after losing to Brighton.
