“What’s the point of the suspension? “it’s really over now”: NFL fans react as 49ers owner Jed York gets a 6-game ban and $500,000 fine

San Francisco 49ers principal owner Jed York has been suspended for six regular-season games and fined $500,000 by the NFL for violating the league’s Personal Conduct Policy. This has prompted a wave of reactions from fans who questioned the practical impact of the penalty.

This stems from York’s arrest in East Palestine, Ohio, in August during an undercover operation. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct. This came after he was initially charged in connection with responding to an online prostitution advertisement and possession of criminal tools.

Under the terms of his no-contest plea, York paid $1,150 in fines and received a one-day jail sentence for each charge, to be served concurrently, with credit for one day already served.

Jed York has already missed the 49ers’ first three games of the season as the league wrapped up its investigation, and those will count among the six games he’s being sanctioned to miss. This will allow him to return fully in Week 7, when San Francisco plays the Atlanta Falcons. ESPN reported he was in Melbourne in Week 1 but did not attend the overseas game.

York’s suspension and financial penalty have generated a lot of reactions among NFL fans. A section of the fans question the absurdity of the punishment and its potential impact. Critics also pointed to perceived inconsistencies in how the NFL disciplines owners versus players.

Here’s a look at some of the reactions online:

@AdamSchefter it’s really over now fellas he can’t own the niners for six weeks

@AdamSchefter What’s the point of the suspension? It’s not like he’s playing left guard

@AdamSchefter So.. it’s like telling him to work from home and pay a $50 fine?

@AdamSchefter How are they gonna win any games now while he’s off the field

@AdamSchefter So he gets punished but not Robert Kraft??

@AdamSchefter Thats chump change. NFL is a joke

Jed York accepts NFL disciplinary decision

Jed York made it known on Friday that he has accepted the NFL’s disciplinary decision on his violation of the league’s Personal Conduct Policy. The San Francisco owner shared his view of the sanction in a statement, while apologizing again for his actions.

“To my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners, I am deeply sorry,” York said in a statement released by the team. “This was an inexcusable mistake and I take full responsibility. What I did does not reflect my values or the man I strive to be for my family.

“While I fell short of the model I want to set for my sons, I now hope to show them the importance of owning up to one’s failures, and that even our worst moments teach us to be better. Leading the 49ers is a privilege, and one I don’t take lightly. Your trust will have to be earned back over time, and I look forward to that work ahead.”

The outside noise around Jed York hasn’t been a distraction for the San Francisco 49ers. The team has got off to a 3-0 start to the season and will be looking to extend the winning run when they face a difficult test against the Denver Broncos.
