“I’m getting fired,” “We were his personal crash test dummies” – 41-year-old star reveals surprise WWE call

A 41-year-old star has revealed receiving a surprise WWE call, which left him fearing he was getting fired. Often the promotions pick stars for certain roles, and while they might not always get the spotlight, the role remains vital.

This is what happened when The Rock decided to dust off his ring rust in 2011. After WrestleMania 27, the Brahma Bull was scheduled to face John Cena at next year’s WrestleMania.

But ahead of their match, the two stars were booked for a tag team match against The Miz and R-Truth at Survivor Series 2011. This was going to be The Great One’s first match since 2004, and he needed somebody to train with him to get into match conditioning.

During an interview on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, former tag team champion Brian Myers, aka Curt Hawkins, revealed that he and Joe Hennig (Curtis Axel) were handpicked by Triple H and John Laurinaitis to train with The Rock.

Myers revealed when he first received the call from Laurinaitis, he thought he was getting fired.

“He hosted the Mania, and he was around, but then he was going to do that tag in The Garden, and they said he wanted to train. Johnny Ace called me on a Wednesday, and I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m getting fired, this is it.’ Then they were like, ‘Please hold for Joe Hennig.’ I’m like, ‘WTF?’ It was the weirdest,” he said.

He said he was on a date with his future wife when the call came. Myers mentioned that the experience of training with the former WWE Champion was unbelievable.

“Johnny is like, ‘Yeah, Rock wants to train, and we picked you guys.’ It was an unbelievable experience, because, obviously, Dwayne’s schedule is something else, and we were his personal little crash test dummies. You just never knew. A couple times I flew to Miami in the morning, train with him in Miami, and then flew out of Miami, like my commute was Miami and back in a day,” he mentioned.

Brian Myers said his WWE release was one of the best days of his life

It was three years later after training with The Rock that WWE released Brian Myers, ending his eight-year stay with the promotion.

During the conversation on INSIGHT, he said that being released from the company was good for him since he wasn’t getting utilized.

He said he was “thrilled” and started immediately competing on the indies. Myers eventually worked his back into WWE in 2016 and won the RAW Tag Team Championship with Zack Ryder at WrestleMania 35.
