Time for me to knock this one on the ‘ead. Thanks for your company and well played England. The OBO will return…
Harry Brook speaks:
I thought the communication and plans going into the second half of the game were perfect. We adapted really well with the bat and knew it was a tricky surface if they hit the top of the stumps and to carry that over into our bowling performance was awesome.
Phil Salt obviously played a mega innings there and Jos Buttler’s little cameo in the PowerPlay got us off to a good start. We recognised early it was a tough surface to hit at the top of the stumps and there were lots of conversations between myself, Baz and the batters who had been out there. We had our plans and stuck to them.
The bowlers knew exactly what they needed to do. For the next two games it’s about adapting to the surfaces as quickly as possible and as a batting unit using the pitch to access different areas of the ground as well. Tonight was a perfect example of that.”
Jofra Archer is player of the match:
I’m just happy to contribute to the team. It’s a lot of holding your nerve against world-class batters and you just have to keep hitting your spot. Sometimes you bowl good balls and they go for boundaries. Today I was lucky to get a wicket with a bad one as well. For the most part I am happy with how it is coming out.
I enjoy bowling with Josh Tongue. I’ve bowled with him every game so far since I’ve been back for the summer. He also passes information on to me as well, he’s not a hoarder.”
A fuming Shreyas Iyer speaks: (just the x 2 ‘awful’s from him)
It was atrocious. Losing by such a big margin is definitely not acceptable. We need to accept this loss and go back to the drawing board. Looking at the wicket, I don’t think it was a 200 wicket. The way we batted – losing five wickets in the powerplay didn’t create momentum.
You can plan a lot in the team meeting, but in the ground, you need to adapt. When you are chasing 200, you need to pace your innings. We fell short in that, the execution was awful.
It is a great opportunity to come back strong. We have played awful cricket, but a lot of learnings from it as well. Every individual has to think about himself and take responsibility.”
“Hey Jim”
Hello to you Farhan.
“I guess it is safe to say what happened in Ireland did not stay in Ireland and has crossed the English channel, whatever it was.”
This reads like the tag line to a schlocky 90s movie. But yes, the last time India lost four T20Is in a row was in 2021.
India bowled out for 76 – England win by 125 runs!
Rashid bowls Varun neck and crop to seal the victory! Wow. That is some win for England, they inflict India’s heaviest ever defeat in T20I cricket and go 2-0 up in the series with just two games left to play. Wonderful bowling performance, led by Archer and Tongue and followed up by Jacks and Rashid. Trent Bridge has just witnessed a comprehensive pummelling.
11th over: India 72-9 (Varun 1, P Yadav 2) Josh Tongue finishes with 4-28 from his four overs. He nearly gets a fifth and finishes the job with his final ball, a full one on the stumps that Prince Yadav manages to dig out and away for two runs.
WICKET! Harshit Rana c Banton b Tongue 9 (India 70-9)
Tom Banton with a flying catch at backward point! England one wicket away from a thumping win.
10th over: India 70-8 (Rana 9, Varun 1) Varun Chakravarthy arrives in the middle with some Indian fans spotted making an early exit from Trent Bridge. Make em pay, Varun.
Remember when I said I reckon England are thirty runs short? Yeh, they’re ruined going to win by three figures.
WICKET! Arshdeep Singh c Buttler b Rashid 4 (India 68-8)
Buttler doesn’t mess about with this one, India are eight down!
9th over: India 66-7 (Rana 8, Arshdeep 2) Tongue should have another but both Sam Curran and Jos Buttler leave the steepling catch from Arshdeep to each other! I think Curran called and then pulled out at the last. A rare blip for England in this innings.
WICKET! Shivam Dube c Buttler b Tongue 2 (India 63-7)
Tongue returns and he picks up Dube! An under edged pull through to Buttler, India are collapsing in a heap in Nottingham.
8th over: India 60-5 (Rana 7, Dube 2) Shivam Dube is now out in the middle, surely India’s last hope? Will Jacks takes the wicket and goes for just three runs off his second over.
WICKET! Tilak Varma st Buttler b Jacks 3 (India 60-6)
Jos Buttler looks sheepish as he completes the stumping off Jacks with Varma missing with his charge… DRS shows the keeper just about had the ball in his gloves when he whipped off the bails. India lose another and Buttler’s blushes are spared.
7th over: India 60-5 (Varma 3, Rana 6) Rashid replaces Archer after that electric opening spell. Rana times one beautifully off his pads for four. Six off the over. Have I mentioned how much I enjoy Damm Cerveza and Lemon on a warm July evening? I bet a free case tastes even better…
6th over: India 54-5 (Varma 2, Rana 1) Will Jacks rattles through a quick and cheap over, just two runs off it. England are cock-a-hoop. Anyone mind if I crack open a Damm Cerveza and Lemon* and some dry roasted? It feels appropriate.
*Surely The Guardian has done a piece on this as the drink of the summer? I’m open for commissions and sponsorship…)
5th over: India 52-5 (Varma 1, Rana 0) Will Jacks is coming on to bowl and it is Harshit Rana is out there for India, they’ve torn up the batting card!
WICKET! Axar Patel c Buttler b Archer 10 India 52-5)
Axar Patel counterattacks, charging Archer and getting four through the off and then ramping with style to get SIX!
Gone! Archer has the last laugh with his second wicket of the over, he nicks off Patel and gives a word or two to send him away with. England have five wickets inside the PowerPlay!
WICKET! Shreyas Iyer c Bethell b Archer 5 (India 41-4)
Archer can’t believe his luck as Iyer clips a leg stump half volley straight to Bethell at deep backward square!
4th over: India 41-3 (Iyer 4, Axar Patel 0) Axar Patel is promoted to number 5 for India. Has he been told to steady the ship?
WICKET! Ishan Kishan c Bethell b Tongue 13 (India 41-3)
Out! Kishan pulls flat but straight to Bethell on the boundary rope. England have three inside the PowerPlay!
Kishan climbs into a short ball from Tongue and it clears the fence…
3rd over: India 33-2 (Kishan 6, Iyer 4) The crowd aren’t kept down for too long following Sooryavanshi’s dismissal, Shreyas Iyer arrives and flicks Archer off his pads in style for four. Phew, breathless stuff at Trent Bridge.
WICKET! Vaibhav Sooryavanshi c Buttler b Archer 13 (India 29-2)
Archer bowling serious gas, Ishan gets an edge that flies over the keeper for four. A single brings Sooryavanshi on strike… OUT! Archer gets his glove with a well directed bouncer at the armpit clocking 90mph, the teenage wonder is on his way!
2nd over: India 24-1 (Sooryavanshi 13, Kishan 1) Ishan Kishan at first drop. He gets a single off his first ball and will thus be on strike to Archer next over. Booooo!
WICKET! Abhishek Sharma c Salt b Tongue 10 (India 23-1)
Tongue drives a shorter ball into the surface and Abhishek can’t beat Salt on the upper cut, England strike!
Josh Tongue starts with a full bunger that Abhishek smashes for SIX. A single to the next ball… SIX! Sooryavanshi clears his front leg and whips a length ball into the crowd. He mishits a drive next ball to get a single. “Happy with one” chuckles Stuart Broad on the tv commentary.
1st over: India 9-0 (Abhishek 3, Sooryavanshi 6) Abhishek swipes two into the off side to get India going. Its all the lead up to the main event though. The crowd comes alive as a quick single brings Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on strike. Archer treats him to a rapid bouncer that the Kid tries to hook for SIX but doesn’t connect… he does with the next though! Vaibhav slams Archer for SIX over point second ball! Incredible shot.
Here comes Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. They ain’t going to die wondering. Jofra Archer is opening up for England. Play!
England post 201-7
Sam Curran drives the final ball for two to finish on 41 off 24 balls and haul England over 200, just. I have a feeling the home side are twenty to thirty runs short on this wicket. We shall see very soon.
WICKET! Jofra Archer run out (Arshdeep Singh) 5 (England 199-3)
Jofra Archer slugs a welcome four into the leg side and then gets a single to get Curran on strike. Curran leaves a wide yorker that skims the tramlines. Well bowled. Archer then sacrifices himself coming back for a second run that was never there but it means Curran is on strike for the final ball…
