Explained: Why Apple and F1 WAGs including Kelly Piquet and Margarida Corceiro have been facing fan backlash

Apple and F1 WAGs including high-profile names like Kelly Piquet and Margarida Corceiro have found themselves on the wrong end of fan opinion following an event organized by the multi-billion dollar company in Miami on Wednesday. The event, hosted by Lily Muni He, featured multiple of the drivers’ partners.

Apple TV, which is now the official broadcasting partner of F1 in the United States, organized the gathering at the Bath Club in Miami on Wednesday. It was hosted by Williams driver Alex Albon‘s fiancee Lily Muni He, who is also a professional golfer. Other WAGs from the sport confirmed to have attended included Max Verstappen’s girlfriend Kelly Piquet, Lando Norris’ girlfriend Margarida Corceiro, George Russell’s girlfriend Carmen Mundt and Carlos Sainz’s girlfriend Rebecca Donaldson.

However, after images from the event were shared on social media, it received heavy backlash from a large section of the sport’s fanbase, largely centered around the original caption on the Instagram post. Apple TV had described the event as celebrating the “women of F1,” while the gathering featured mainly the wives and girlfriends of drivers rather than women who actually work in the sport. No female engineers, journalists, mechanics or F1 Academy drivers were seen in the pictures.

The backlash has seemingly stemmed from that distinction, with fans taking issue with partners of drivers being referred to as the “women of F1.” Following the reaction, Apple TV has since edited the caption to remove the phrasing.

This event took place as a precursor to the Miami Grand Prix, which is all set to kick off in Florida over the weekend. The Sprint weekend will mark the return of the sport after a five-week break, with the cars taking on the 3.3 mile circuit for the first time since the amendments to the 2026 regulations.

Max Verstappen’s girlfriend, Kelly Piquet, also shared other glimpses from the controversy “women of F1” event organized by Apple, as she shared an image of the extensive menu from the dinner. The event featured what was a 13-course omakase dinner, prepared by Chef Wei Chen of OMAWEI.

Piquet mentioned Lily Muni He in her Instagram story on Wednesday, and also thanked Apple for the invitation.

“Very special and fun night with @lilymhe.

    Thank you @appletv & @beatsbydre”

Piquet also shared a selfie with Muni He via her story, acknowledging the host of the event.

The Brazilian model is in Miami alongside Max Verstappen, who is all set to compete in the Miami GP over the week. If Piquet is indeed spotted in the paddock, this will mark the first race this season that she has attended. Her last appearance in the paddock alongside the 4x world champion was at the 2025 season finale in Abu Dhabi.
