LeBron James is moving on from the LA Lakers after eight seasons. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday, James informed the franchise that they can move on without him and that he plans to play elsewhere. However, he has not announced which team he’ll play for ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The top landing spots for the four-time champion are the Golden State Warriors, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat. The Warriors are looking to form a dynamic duo with James and Steph Curry, but the organization can only offer him a salary of roughly $15.1 million to $21 million.
Thanks for the submission!
The Heat and Cavaliers face the same situation and could potentially only offer him a mid-level exception deal.

After Charania reported on James’ situation with the Lakers, former NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar offered his take on X. Abdul-Jabbar gave his props to the four-time MVP before hinting at a potential return to Cleveland.
“@KingJames LeBron was a winner on and off the court, and Laker fan should appreciate his performance for the last 8 years,” the NBA legend posted. “If LeBron goes home to Cleveland, it won’t matter if they win the world championship or not because it’s Hometown fans will get their opportunity to say their goodbyes to one of the greatest ever.
“And who knows one day he may become Mayor!! @Lakers @NBAcom.”
Charania added that James’ conclusion was a “happiness-led decision” and that he wants to find his happiness with a different franchise. Additionally, whatever he decides on, “it will not be driven by money.”
LeBron James finishes his time in LA averaging 25.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.9 assists on 51.3% shooting. He led the Lakers to six playoff appearances, including a championship win in 2020 at the NBA Bubble in Florida.
LeBron James Thanks the Lakers on Social Media
After it was announced that LeBron James is leaving the Lakers, team governor Jeanie Buss released a statement. Buss expressed her appreciation for James and what he did for the franchise, and wished him well in the next chapter of his storied career.
James reacted to it on X and expressed how appreciative he was of being able to play for the Purple & Gold.
“No, THANK YOU! Truly a honor to wear the 💜💛 while trying to continuing the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint. 🙏🏾🫡👑” James posted.
The oldest active player in the NBA intends to play his 24th season, which will be a new record. LeBron James is the only player to play 23 seasons. James played his first seven years in Cleveland before spending four years in Miami. He returned to play four more seasons with the Cavaliers and joined the Lakers in 2018.
