Eddie Howe eyeing massive new job after Newcastle exit as door opens

Newcastle have made an encouraging start to life under Matthias Jaissle, even if the German has already been given a clear view of the size of his task at St James’ Park.

Jaissle inherited a club going through major change after Eddie Howe brought his five-year spell in charge to a sudden end in July.

Howe had guided Newcastle away from relegation trouble, taken them back into the Champions League and delivered the Carabao Cup in 2025, their first major domestic trophy for 70 years.

However, a disappointing final season and growing frustration over the direction of recruitment preceded his departure.

Newcastle moved quickly to appoint Jaissle from Al-Ahli, paying around £9.5million in compensation and handing him a four-year contract.

The 38-year-old arrived with a reputation for energetic, aggressive football, as well as an impressive trophy record from his spells with Red Bull Salzburg and Al Ahli.

His first three Premier League matches have provided plenty of entertainment, as Newcastle opened with a 2-2 draw against Liverpool before recording an excellent 2-0 victory over Tottenham.

They then had to show a different side against Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Magpies went two goals behind during a poor first half at St James’ Park, but Harvey Barnes gave them hope before substitute Jacob Ramsey struck in the 88th minute to rescue a 2-2 draw.

That comeback kept Jaissle unbeaten with five points from a possible nine.

There is still plenty for him to fix, particularly after Bournemouth repeatedly played through Newcastle during the opening period. Yet the response showed that the fight and belief built during Howe’s reign have not disappeared with him.

While Jaissle attempts to begin his own era on Tyneside, Howe could soon be handed the biggest job of his career.

Eddie Howe eyeing England job as Thomas Tuchel uncertainty opens door

Football Insider’s Wayne Veysey reports that the former Newcastle boss is being lined up as a possible replacement for Thomas Tuchel as England manager.

The report claims Tuchel’s position has become less secure while the FA reviews England’s performance at the 2026 World Cup.

England reached the semi-finals but suffered a painful 2-1 defeat against Argentina after surrendering a late lead. That exit prompted scrutiny of Tuchel’s decisions and the team’s failure to make the most of another promising tournament position.

Veysey adds that Howe is believed to be ready to accept the England job if it becomes available, with the timing considered right for the 48-year-old.

Howe has been linked with the national team before and his record at Newcastle would make him an obvious candidate.

He improved players, built a strong team culture and proved he could handle the pressure attached to a major job. His preference for intense football could also suit an England squad packed with pace and Premier League experience.

No change has yet been confirmed and Tuchel remains in charge.

But Howe’s availability gives the FA a credible alternative if its review leads to action. Newcastle have already moved forward with Jaissle, while their former manager may now be in line for an opportunity which would be extremely difficult to refuse.
