Michael Carrick has reacted as Manchester United get knocked out of the EFL Cup after throwing away a 2-goal lead against Brighton and Hove Albion at home.
Manchester United started the game on the front foot and scored 2 quickfire goals through Shea Lacey and Mason Mount. After scoring the second goal, the Red Devils lost all their momentum and kept conceding chances.

Late on in the first half, Charalampos Kostoulas halved the deficit after the Manchester United backline fell asleep. Brighton took the initiative in the second half and kept pummelling Karl Darlow’s goal. Pascal Gross scored the equalizer, which was quickly followed by Maxim De Cuyper’s strike in the 70th minute to give the visiting team the lead.
Manchester United struggled to create chances thereafter and lost the game. Speaking in the post-match mixed zone, Carrick took the blame upon himself for his team’s performance. He said (via MUFC Scoop on X):
“I totally understand the feelings of the supporters. We have to accept it. I totally accept it. It’s on me ultimately: as a team, what we look like, how we play, and what results you get. I take that. I’ll take the praise, I’ll take the criticism and the upset. I totally understand it, given the way the game went. We have got to win games.”
He added:
“We can’t accept that as a group. I take responsibility for it. The performance towards the end of the second half, that’s on me.”
According to The Athletic, the defeat against Brighton marks the first time Manchester United have lost from a 2-goal advantage at Old Trafford in 50 years. The defeat comes days after their loss to local rivals Manchester City.

Speaking in the post-match presser after the Red Devils’ loss to Brighton, Carrick addressed the JJ Gabriel issue. The teenage star has reportedly asked to leave the club immediately due to a lack of game time. Speaking about the situation, Carrick said (via UtdDistrict on X):
“We need to exercise a bit of caution on this matter. He’s a 15-year-old boy. Above all, it’s about the well-being, protection, and care that JJ needs.
“The situation is what it is, but we must be careful with the media coverage and the way we approach this case.”
