Mavericks land big-name replacement for Nico Harrison

The Dallas Mavericks have found their replacement for former general manager Nico Harrison.

The Mavericks are hiring former Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri as their new team president, according to multiple reports. Ujiri’s official title will be Team President and Alternate Governor.

Ujiri is a splashy hire for a Mavericks organization that needed one. He is credited with building the Raptors’ 2019 NBA championship team and is highly respected and well-regarded around the game.

The Raptors and Ujiri surprisingly parted ways at the end of last season after he had served as their team president since 2013. Later reports suggested that the organization had some concerns that he was stretched too thin amid some of his other ventures.

Ujiri joins a Mavericks franchise that has a strong core in place, led by Cooper Flagg, and another lottery pick coming their way this season. He will be tasked with turning that group into a contender once again, which might finally be enough to allow the organization to move on from his predecessor’s decision to trade Luka Doncic.
